The military operation in Vietnam drags on and requires more and more resources. Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Harold Moore, a battalion of the Airmobile Division. But in the first major battle 395 Americans find themselves surrounded, and the enemy greatly outnumbered them.

The heroic movie starring the inimitable Mel Gibson leaves behind a general impression of mostly uselessness of all the heroes' sacrifices. Yes, they are brave paratroopers, who stand up to defend the interests of the country, and fulfill their task, no matter what.

But in terms of the overall portrayal of the Vietnam War, we see a battalion of soldiers thrown in to fight, by and large, just for a piece of land on the other side of the Earth from home and for vague goals. This comes through in the characters' reactions as well.

In the end, it turns out that the heroes flew in, fought, killed, died, and left, taking only horror and death as their memories from Vietnam. All suffered for phantom ideals.

Against the background of the “big” conflict is much more interesting portrayal of Colonel Moore himself, his relationship with the ward soldiers, and the internal conflict between the desire to preserve the lives of soldiers and the need to fulfill the duty. History throws him new and new dilemmas, starting with the upbringing of soldiers-new recruits, through the need to send his men to death, the possibility of retreat, to the final push for victory on the battlefield.

The protagonist does not lack the will and ability to motivate the soldiers. He wisely chose people, guided by nothing but their skills. He is an example to his men: 'The officer is the first to leave the helicopter and the last to leave the battlefield'. His genuine care makes him an unquestionable authority to the young soldiers. But caring does not prevent him from effectively mushrooming and training his recruits. He immediately and sincerely warns his men of the risks, he immediately prepares them for the losses that are inevitable in battle.

During battle, he is personally present at every hot spot of the battle. His example of indomitable will brings even wounded, exhausted soldiers back into battle. At the same time, the colonel perceived the death of each soldier closely, as his child. In the end, for him the fulfillment of the task was more important than anything else, and this conviction was transmitted to his soldiers.

Separately worth noting are the episodes with the wives of the soldiers, who also face the toughest trials. They live in an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear, terrified to open the front door once again, fearing to see a tired letter carrier holding out a letter with news of the tragedy.

The movie is very memorable, although it is heavy both because of the events shown and because of the understanding of the senselessness of the massacre taking place on the screen.
