A powerful convoy of trucks kicking up clouds of dust is moving toward the state border of the American Southwest.

The massive collection of vehicles of all sizes and shapes is led by the Rubber Duckling, a legendary truck driver who has amassed an army of like-minded individuals to protest police corruption, state laws, and shady politics.

Director Sam Pekinpa was prescient when he made the movie “Convoy” in 1978. The movie had a good box office in his home country and abroad, and then, some seven years later, it reached a wide Soviet audience. “Sovexportfilm”, the then monopoly censor of Soviet film distribution, after some deliberation and a long choice, still released ‘Convoy’ on Soviet screens. The main idea of the movie, which moved the Soviet film officials, was, extremely rare for American films, the idea of solidarity (professional, class, national).

The clash of truck drivers gives, as it were, the impetus for an unstoppable chain reaction. Colleague drivers stand up for their comrade in distress, and new and new daredevils join them. Around the truck, recently easily accessible to the whistle of the brazen sheriff, a string of heavy trucks is lined up. And now the outbreak of anger of justice on the part of a common man offended by the authorities is already developing into a powerful collective resistance....

As for the movie itself, or, to be more precise, its creators, the brightest figure here is certainly the director Sam Pekinpa. It should be noted that this is the most bizarre, most controversial and fickle director among his colleagues from Hollywood. Each of his works, which have had a huge resonance and good box office, is built, above all, as a tense, rapidly unfolding action. One can't help but get the impression that Sam Pekinpa, this gifted director, is most of all “puzzled” to “capture” the title of “the most, the most” (the best chase, the best fight, the best shootout, etc., etc.).

In “Convoy” the director stayed true to himself and made a truly thrilling spectacle. There is everything here to amuse the viewer: dashing chases on heavy trucks, tooth-crushing fights, incredible stunts and, of course, humor (and how can there be without it in such “spring” movies?).

As for the acting, of course, a wonderful artistic “solo” was given by Kris Kristofferson. I believe that the role of Robert Duck, nicknamed Duckling, was the best in the actor's movie career. Kristofferson created a courageous image of a trucker, who at the right moment is ready to take on the role of leader, to rally around him many like-minded people.

One of the “fighting” comrades Duckling played a famous American actor Burt Young. The actor, I don't argue, is not bad, but he is best remembered for his role as the trainer Rocky Balboa in the famous movies-dramas about boxer Rocky with Sylvester Stallone.

In the role of dumb sheriff-bribery, against whose arbitrariness and started all this cheese-fight, starred no less popular Ernest Borgnine, and the role of a friend of the Duckling Melissa played by Eli McGraw. It should be noted that the actress has never stood out (if only successfully complemented the acting duo Steve McQueenu in the movie all the same Sam Pekinpa “Escape”, filmed in 1972). And in “Convoy” all went for the actress usually, quiet and ordinary.

At the end I want to note that the genre canon of the movie “Convoy” remains itself, and Pekinpa remains Pekinpa, and in the final movie the viewer is once again captured by the crazy element of pure adventure ...
