Story Movie

200 AD. The army of the Roman Empire under the command of General Marcus Acacius storms Numidia, the last free state in North Africa. In the battle with the invaders, the warrior Hanno's wife, an archer, is killed and he is captured. Together with other captives he is prepared to be sold into slavery, but thanks to his physical endurance and fighting skills he is noticed and bought by the organizer of gladiatorial fights Macrinus. So the warrior becomes a gladiator, obsessed with revenge against the Roman general. Macrinus promises Hanno to arrange a meeting with his arch-enemy, if the guy will fight spectacularly, colorfully and fiercely in the arena of the Colosseum.

Review 4K Movie

At first, many people were shocked that the first trailer for this perhaps not-so-anticipated movie had hip-hop playing mindlessly, which really didn't go with the Ancient Rome theme. And then, after the release of the second rabid trailer, everyone seemed to be horrified: the sequel's protagonist Lucius is the native son of Russell Crowe's Maximus, as his mother Lucilla makes clear in one scene! Imagine what it was like for us in the darkened theater (thank goodness no one else was there) to learn this news. The trailers were not watched during the summer, so we got the effect of an exploded bomb. In the first part this news was never mentioned, they took and devalued the torment of the family of the former general, behind the back of the respected Marcus Aurelius managed to make a child to his daughter.

Long before the premiere, Sir Ded did not linger and immediately laid out this trump card. I wonder what he intended with this move? That millennials will run in droves to theaters for the offspring of their favorite fallen warrior? Since the word “gladiator” is not a proper name, we naively assumed they would approve a script with a new story about the gladiator who could, without any familial connection. In the end, for 150 minutes, the father of “Soldier Jane” tortures the audience with almost the same things that people saw in 2000-2001: political intrigue, Rome in the hands of madmen, the rise of the slave, the stern General Akakiy (remember the hard trailer?) Akakievich with doubts about the new regime in the city. The only new thing the director decides to take is poorly generated CGI animals.

Lucius is trying to be a unique character, he's the heir after all. His speeches are therefore weak when it comes time to say something. People look at him and see the loud-mouthed Maximus and Marcus Aurelius, and he uses their names to make sure he's his own. With the further nightmarish news that Sir Ded has willy-nilly decided to do a threequel, this Lucius of yours looks like a raw character so far. A taciturn little fellow, but if he opens his mouth, Virgil's words or wise thoughts will sprinkle. Relationships with other gladiators, you can say, nothing. During the battles in the arena amusingly chat some more, then again the loneliness in the network and highlighted uniqueness of the hero. The sequel will show him as an experienced warrior at the head of Rome, which is threatened by a monkey.

Well, it's that monkey of one of the twins who turned the Eternal City into something boring. Not much is known about them, by the way. They're scary except for their makeup and their screams, but not their status. Both are such easy targets for political games that one can only sigh at the memory of the vile Commodus and his lust for power. General Acacius is suddenly shown as a sort of revived Maximus, but is also suddenly removed from the script in a vivid dramatic moment. Understandably, this was required for Lucius' character development, but then why bring in Pedro Pascal, as if he had just gained fame after his role as Oberyn Martell. Overall, the marvelous script is predictable due to the fact that the characters spell out as much as all the plans.

To the lazy viewer, everything is chewed up in a clear, understandable and accessible manner. To somehow dilute this TV show in the format of a full-length movie, they called Denzel Washington. Many might have thought that he has an ordinary secondary role without ambition. But the actor is a venerable, while watching, you understand why he agreed to the role of the owner of his gladiates. Perhaps his white-toothed Macrin is the character that is still interesting to follow. Why? If you're not afraid, watch the sequel then. Let them throw dollars at us, but he's probably similar in his ambitions to Penguin, the series about which came out in the fall. Who should be praised from the ensemble is this here New York gangsta with earrings in his ears, impeccable attentiveness and a sly smile.

In general, it feels as if the creators were a little or even grandly afraid to step aside, so they desperately stuffed their brilliant script with the image of Maximus, as if it were a tribute to the fallen glorious warrior. Especially for this case spent millions on the animated intro. There were a couple of inserts from the original, too. But when Sir Grandpa decided to copy the same shot with the hand floating over the wheat, and use the song Now We are Free, then.... We realized that we didn't like the second part, it's better to revisit the inimitable original, which doesn't need any sequels, honestly. As soon as we hear Hans Zimmer's music, we automatically get a lump in our throat and goosebumps. Genius! Not for nothing he refused to take part in Sir Grandpa's affairs.
