Review 4K Movie

The struggle of people in this movie-catastrophe occurs with the main elements - fire and water, which in a confined space create a rattling mixture. Well, if only fire and water. In addition, the heroes will have to face the lack of air, rubble and explosions, cold and electricity. And not everyone will be able to overcome these trials.

But the essence of the movie is not in this. About a dozen people of different age and social groups, different professions, different races found themselves in a stone trap. They initially had nothing in common and by and large did not care about each other, everyone cared about saving only his own life. There was no unity in this micro-society: they argued, quarreled, behaved selfishly. And only Stallone's hero was able to convey to them the simple truth: “When we do something together, we can do anything.” He united the victims and it was a pleasure to watch these people at the end. This critical situation changed them completely, it changed their attitude towards other people and their lives too.

This 1996 film was directed by Universal Studios staff director Rob Cohen. It was his third studio movie. The first was an interesting biographical movie “Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story”, then he directed the successful fairy tale “Heart of the Dragon”. And 5 years after “Daylight” came out “Fast and Furious”, then “3 X's”, which made him famous. Now we can say that the action movie with elements of drama - it is one hundred percent his genre.

Sylvester Stallone played here is not a superman, but a simple rescuer, who at the cost of incredible efforts trying to get people out of a deadly trap. In such roles of simple but strong in spirit and body people, Stallone is very convincing (Rocky from the movie of the same name, Leone from “Tyuryaga”, Lincoln Hawk from “All Out” and others). Here his hero, former lifeguard Keith Latour, does not try to prove anything to anyone, does not bravado and puffery, does not enter into unnecessary arguments, he just does his job. Because there are no former lifeguards, just as there are no former doctors, firefighters and so on. He happened to be near the scene of the disaster, but did not hesitate to risk his life to save people.

In addition, Stallone created a unique image of a little “crazy” rescuer, who is ready for any risk, for any adventure as long as not to stand idly by when people die. At times he acted on chance (“If I calculated everything correctly...”) and only a great physical form (and sometimes a miracle) saved him, but “there are no miracles without miracles, right?” (Keith Latour). He took a risk and he won.

In addition to Sly, the movie starred the then little-known Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn from “The Lord of the Rings”). He played the role of a self-confident mountaineer looking for publicity, who by chance found himself in the same tunnel.

What is really outstanding in the movie is the music. It is very beautiful and strong. Diverse compositions emphasize all the drama of the situation and make the scenes of struggle with the elements especially powerful. The compositions “Searching For a Miracle” and “Light At the End” are especially strong.

The movie as a whole is watched in one breath. And not only because of the music, which accompanies almost all scenes, but also because the action starts almost immediately, without rocking. Besides, the raging elements practically do not give the heroes (and the audience, respectively) a break. The picture looks solid and dynamic. Although all the action takes place in one tunnel, the adventures of the heroes are interesting to watch.

I suspect, on the motives of what movie this picture is made. It's The Poseidon Adventure, 1972. Where a liner capsizes in a giant tsunami. Yes, the place of action is different, but the essence is the same, a lot of similar moments and even some characters are similar. But that movie is a classic, and “Daylight” is a modern movie, more dynamic, more spectacular, but not inferior in drama. There the hero Gene Hackman led a small group of rescued people up and up, to the bottom, and the water followed them on their heels. Similarly, in this picture, Stallone's character leads the survivors, they meet many obstacles, but only together can overcome them and eventually see... daylight.
