Five years later, Jonas Taylor, a fighter against environmental crime, together with employees of the company that owns the deep-sea station, descends to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, where a hidden ecosystem with unseen creatures and giant sharks has existed for millions of years. On the spot, it turns out that the station has been seized by a group of mercenaries who are illegally extracting particularly valuable minerals.

We've fallen so far out of the media space in the last few bitter years that we missed the news about the director of the surprise sequel to the box office hit of faraway 2018 starring one of the coolest bald jocks ever. The surprise was not the sequel, but the appearance of Ben Wheatley in the director's chair, which was not expected. Quite a distinctive director with very good projects in his filmography rolled up to the filming of the second part of the B-movie. But remembering his last movie 'In the Ground', everything becomes clear. At 50, it's probably too late to hope for anything more. You have to shoot a typical Jason Statham, against whom even prehistoric monsters can not find a reception.

What does 'Meg 2: The Trench' boil down to? First off, 'The Trench' in the title is a tough name for a Chinese explorer on the good guys side with Jason Statham at the helm, given to him by his father. The man grew up, realized his purpose and decided to explore the wondrous underwater world. If you're wondering if we're serious or not, check out the muvi. Secondly, in a movie about creepy megalodons, there are criminally, cruelly few megalodons themselves.... megalodons. In the first part of the story, the wet monster is shown as a pet as if by accident. In the second part, there are more carcasses, but they are there all the time smoking on the sidelines while powerful people solve their pressing problems of betrayal, money, intrigue. At the end, everything is in place.

Ben Wheatley and the radiant screenwriters are more interested in adult relationships between human characters, kind of funny dialog between them, exploring their characters in extreme situations, which makes the two-hour running time seem too long. Sprinkled in with this feathered wonder is Chinese philosophy, Chinese cast members. 'Meg 2: The Trench' shows that at first two-legged people, as they know how to do well, make a mess of things down by the water, so that in the end they can spill the consequences of their deeds from above on the surface of the earth. In some places it is funny, interesting and spectacular.

Unfortunately, you can't get anything good out of the underwater shot, when a grandiose thing comes out of the hole in the rift after the explosion. At the end you sit and wait for a great massacre with megalodons and another kaiju from the depths, but the action is reduced to a local fight between sharks and invulnerable, sweet Carrier, who fired the makeup artist not to draw bruises, scratches and black eyes on his face. As an advertisement for visiting fun places during bathing season, Ben Wheatley's creation succeeded. But the big-budget remake of 'Two Million Years Later' disappointingly did not. Neither is the Chinese cover of The Ting Tings' 'That's Not My Name'. It's good for once. Bolder.
