Circumstances are such that Jesse urgently needs to get his feet out of Las Vegas. This impulsive young man is not used to living by the law. He steals a car, and on the way to Los Angeles he has to shoot a policeman. As he gets closer to the city, his situation gets worse and worse. It seems that the whole world has turned against him. But, strangely enough, it is at this time that he meets a girl who makes his heart pound at a furious pace, then freeze from the sharpness of feelings. He's been waiting for this girl all his life. But now that the entire state police is after him, he has other things on his mind.

Jesse (Richard Gere) makes a living stealing cars. On his way from Vegas to Los Angeles, he accidentally shoots a cop and, before fleeing to Mexico, decides to take Monica (Valerie Capriski), an architecture student, with him at all costs.

Why watch it?

The original 1960 film À bout de souffle, which this film with Gere is a remake of, is usually discussed with breathless enthusiasm and rolling eyes. And for good reason, because it was directed by Jean-Luc Godard, one of the founders of the French New Wave, which, according to critics (and Wikipedia), had a revolutionary influence on world cinema. Seventy years later, the original looks strange: ragged editing, a crumpled plot, sloppy acting—time has not been kind to the film. But the remake with Girardot is another matter. Receiving an extremely cool reception in 1983 (low box office and low ratings), this erotic thriller with a strong emphasis on “erotic” grabs your attention from the very first minutes and doesn't let go until the very end.

The reckless passion between the main characters looks convincing. It fuels the film as it moves from a love story (or rather, a fuck story) to the inevitable denouement. According to information on the internet, it was this film, and not the original, that had a powerful impact on Hollywood's leading cinephile, Quentin Tarantino. And it's easy to see why — the character of Gira, with his love of rock ‘n’ roll, comics (Jesse constantly reads about the Silver Surfer, which metaphorically overlaps with the plot of the film), and his style of dress, is the spitting image of Clarence from True Love, the script for which was written by QT in the 90s. And that's reason enough to give this forgotten thriller at least one viewing.
