Story Movie

In the US, an underwater laboratory called Deep Star Six was designed. The Navy agreed to finance its creation on the condition that secret military installations would be placed there. After descending to the bottom of the ocean, the laboratory disturbed a deep-sea creature unknown to science, which will now exterminate the station's personnel.

Review 4K Movie

What is Sean S. Cunningham famous for, apart from the fact that he started the legendary series of slasher films about a maniac in a hockey mask? Perhaps for producing third-party horror films and participating in documentaries, where he recalled the creation of Friday the 13th. Yes, the first part of Friday the 13th was enough to get Sean's name into film textbooks, but what else can he boast about in terms of directing? Perhaps Spring Break, a rather moronic teen comedy that nevertheless made good money, and a film that was not a masterpiece or a box office hit, but stood out somewhat from Cunningham's other films. That film is DeepStar Six.

I could give the film a 7 or even higher. It has a couple of good and charismatic actors, melodic music by Harry Manfredi, a pretty decent giant crab, and a stunning scene where a man who tries to escape from an underwater station is torn apart by the intense pressure. All of this would be worthy of the proverbial seven, but unfortunately, we have to settle for “above average.”

First and foremost, the proverbial crab is rarely seen here, mainly only in the final third of the film. The rest of the time, Sean devotes himself to the harsh everyday life of submariners. Admittedly, Cunningham manages to create an atmosphere, but come on, make up your mind — are you making a film about a huge crustacean attacking an underwater station, or are you talking about how bad it is to detonate nuclear missiles underwater?

Secondly, the monster itself turned out to be neither here nor there — yes, the animators brought it to life well, but the crab itself turned out to be somewhat frail. And it doesn't rage much — it kills, but these scenes are unremarkable, and there isn't that much blood. In any case, in the aforementioned scene about the man and blood pressure, there is almost more blood than in all the other scenes combined.

And thirdly, there's the blurred ending, in which the moment when the crab rises to the surface is already questionable (under normal circumstances, it would have been torn apart). And in general, it's somehow worn out. It would have been better if Sean had done it the old-fashioned way and made it jump off Jason's back, who would have dragged the heroes into the watery abyss.

Cunningham both saves and ruins this film. But the pleasant moments here are few and far between, yet they outweigh the film's shortcomings. It's a good film, high-quality, but at times illogical and not worthy of inclusion in the golden fund of horror films. At best, it shuffles its feet at the entrance.
