Story Movie

Los Angeles cop Martin Riggs is brave and reckless, he literally walks in front of bullets without fear for his life. Family man Roger Murtaugh is older and more cautious. Two policemen, Vietnam veterans, investigate a case involving the suspicious suicide of a young woman. The thread of the search leads them to drug dealers, who also turn out to be Vietnam War veterans who have coalesced into a tight-knit criminal organization.

Review 4K Movie

There are times when you just want to relax in front of the TV. That's when classic films like Die Hard or Lethal Weapon come to mind, and your hand reaches for the shelf where that very DVD is waiting for you, with the title of a cult film from the 80s or 90s written on it. Watching these films about once a year gives you a huge boost of positive emotions and boundless pleasure, even though you're not watching them for the first, second, or third time.

The legendary film by genre maestro Richard Donner does not feature any supernatural plot or unexpected twists. Yes, the plot is a little banal and hackneyed. The investigation into the murder of a young girl brings together two completely opposite people (who are also black and white police officers) who are destined to become partners. But that's where the fun begins.

Roger Murtaugh: “Has anyone ever survived meeting you?”
Martin Riggs: “Well, I haven't killed you yet.”

There are two of them. A pair of legendary cops, Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover).

Martin Riggs is a lone wolf cop. After the death of his wife, he is going through a rough patch, contemplating suicide in the evenings and spending his days thinking about how to get a stray bullet to end the nightmare and loneliness that fill his life after the loss of his beloved, whose death took away everything he used to live for. Half of the police consider him a daredevil, while the other half are convinced that he is completely insane.

“You should be registered as a deadly weapon,” says Roger Murtaugh.

Roger Murtaugh has served for 20 years without a scratch and lives a quiet and measured life in a large house with his family. Thinking about possible retirement in the near future, he is already buying a boat and making plans for the future. But then he meets his new partner...

“I'm too old for all this” - Roger Murtaugh (a phrase he repeats throughout all four films).

The director even emphasizes the contrast between the two characters with small details. Even their weapons point to this. While the unstoppable and reckless Riggs has a lethal 9mm Beretta, Murtaugh has an old (or rather old-fashioned) four-inch Smith & Wesson that has been tried and tested over the years.

Lethal Weapon is a film that can be watched in one sitting, and the whole point of the film is not in its cleverly twisted plot, which sometimes takes a back seat, as the film draws you in and is mainly based on the charisma of two wonderful actors, and it is primarily interesting to watch the development of the relationship between the main characters. A relationship that doesn't work out at first, but then grows into a great friendship.

In addition to the excellent performances by Gibson and Glover, the success of Lethal Weapon is also due to the brilliant performances of the entire cast, plus the stunning soundtrack with the title track “Meet Martin Riggs” by Eric Clapton. And, of course, we cannot fail to mention Stephen Goldblatt's remarkable cinematography.

At the time, the films were not known for their supernatural plots or jaw-dropping special effects, which look great in this film, even though it has been more than (oh my God) 20 years since its release.

And yet, throughout the history of cinema, a huge number of films have been made with such a hackneyed script about black and white police partners. But Richard Donner's crime action film is one of the best in its genre, and the Gibson-Glover duo is definitely one of the most colorful and charismatic.

To sum up, when filming Lethal Weapon, it is unlikely that anyone thought it would be such a success and that there would be not just one sequel, but a film series lasting 11 long years, giving us four wonderful and beautiful films.
