Review 4K Movie

The first “The Accountant” back in 2016 was a breath of fresh air among similar action films. An engaging plot with intriguing twists at the end, an original protagonist, decent acting, and lively, fast-paced action led to very positive reviews and good box office returns. A sequel was only a matter of time, even though all the key plot lines in the original had been wrapped up.

And now, almost 10 years later, the sequel is here. ‘The Accountant 2’ (2025; actually, ‘The Auditor’ or ‘The Accountant’, but when did our localizers ever care about correct translations?) falls into the same trap as most unsuccessful sequels, even though the core team, from the director and screenwriter to the cast, has remained almost unchanged.

So, while the original The Accountant hooked viewers with an interesting and, for a while, mysterious story about the protagonist, the development of his relationship with Anna Kendrick's character, the storyline from the hero's childhood, and his confrontation with both annoying cops and typical villains, the sequel has nothing left of the original. The story of the complicated relationship between the killer brothers has been replaced by a lighthearted family action flick. Kendrick's character has disappeared from the sequel altogether. Interesting details in the main character's behavior related to his autism are virtually ignored in the sequel (well, there is one episode at the beginning of the film that refers to the original, and a scene with cowboy dancing, which seems to allude to the protagonist's illness, but it looks unconvincing, because at any convenient moment this key detail from the original is forgotten). The gloomy atmosphere of mystery and intrigue surrounding the main character's past life in the second part has given way to a light Mexican action movie set somewhere on the Texas border. At times, the film is more reminiscent of ‘Killer 2’ than the first film, mainly due to the Mexican locations and the key plot line involving kidnapping.

Returning to the discussion of the script, it should also be noted that the sequel lacks a well-written, coherent story. The main characters are constantly distracted, the film is full of drawn-out and completely unnecessary episodes (usually with meaningless dialogue), and even the inventive action doesn't save the story. Personally, having enjoyed watching the original in the cinema, I was surprised to find that in the case of the second The Accountant, I struggled to stay awake for almost the entire film. And the plot, involving the search for a Mexican family, is much weaker than the corruption and conspiracy of the original.

There have been some metamorphoses in the behavior and characters of the main characters. Now, instead of sullen and withdrawn killers, we have two cheerful brothers on the road, discussing dogs, cats, dancing, girls, and other nonsense. While the humor in the original was subtle, unobtrusive, and appropriate, not detracting from the overall dark atmosphere of a serious film, here the humor falls flat, detracting from both the atmosphere of the film and the images of the main characters. Ben Affleck, known as a talented director and slightly less successful actor, created a very interesting action hero in the first part, but also successfully buried him with his wooden performance in the second. John Bernthal, who looks similar to Tom Hardy (The Punisher, The Killer, The Walking Dead), instead of being a silent, violent mercenary (which his character was in the original), is forced to contort himself and play a clown with a gun to suit the weak script. There is no point in talking about the other actors, except for the key pair of main characters. John Simmons literally made a cameo appearance here.

The Accountant 2 turned out to be a mediocre action movie and a completely unnecessary sequel, inferior to the original in every way.
