Somewhere outside of time and space, the planet Krull was attacked by a tyrant and great conqueror of universal proportions, the Beast, with his countless army of ghost warriors. He burst in right at the royal wedding, killing most of the guests and kidnapping the most beautiful princess bride, with the aim of continuing his vile lineage. And now, the unfortunate, grief-stricken Prince Colvin has no choice but to arm himself with a legendary weapon and set off to rescue his beloved, fortunately there are caring warriors and sorcerers ready to accompany our hero on this deadly adventure.

A frequent and popular genre in movie theaters in the era of video salons, how well do you remember the magical, specific impressions of fantasy films of the 80s - “Conan the Barbarian,” “The Amazing Story,” The Animal King, Willow, Labyrinth, Time Bandits, and many, many others. I remember it well. All these films with dragons, brave rags-to-riches heroes, evil overlords with their monumental foam black castles, which at the end were blown to smithereens by fireworks, and the surrounding areas were densely populated with all kinds of fantastic animatronic puppets. The “time machine” continues to work as before - it awakens in me the young adventurer who sincerely experienced, was moved, and eagerly clung to the screen, following the main characters on their difficult heroic journey. In search of those feelings, I look for similar films in my movie collection, and to my surprise, the film “Cullum” hit the mark. It's exactly what I need.

In the rich filmography of English director Peter Yates, twice nominated for an Oscar, the film “Krul” occupies a position closer to the end of his creative career, after which he still managed to shoot a dozen different films - both real hits and frankly failed films. The diversity of his films is striking. Over his long career, the director tried his hand at different genres. It's hard to say whether this was due to his versatility or his creative search, but he caught my interest, and I noted several films that I found appealing and would like to see. The film is interesting, among other things, because it features both old and new Hollywood. In addition to the director, the cult screenwriter Stanford Sherman, who worked on the old 1960s series Batman and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. As a viewer who grew up mostly on films from the late 20th century, I was delighted to spot young actors in supporting roles, and without much effort, I spotted several luminaries of the modern acting world.

It is surprising that no one has ever mentioned such a powerful film as Krull, considering that it had an unforgivably huge budget and did well at the box office, and was, in fact, a hit of its year, but somehow it escaped the attention of our post-Soviet audience. I came across the film completely by accident, and I am grateful that a Canadian DVD collector recommended it to me on Instagram. Imagine my surprise when I found this film on our networks with a multi-voice voiceover in addition to a bunch of “gnawing” translations. So, it was released on video or shown on TV.

Guys, if you like films in this style and understand what I'm talking about, you simply must watch Krull. My recommendation.
