Story Movie

In the 21st century, the Earth is dying out and it is becoming increasingly difficult to live on it. Scientists hope to establish a colony on Mars. A team of six astronauts is sent to the planet to survey the planet for its suitability for life. However, after a six-month mission, difficulties arise during landing. Now the astronauts are faced with the problem of how to get off this planet.

Review 4K Movie

How are we used to seeing space in movies? Often it is heroic and grandiose, with the main characters in high-tech spacesuits walking to the launch pad, followed by a beautiful rocket launch and the triumph of the human mind, which was able to overcome Earth's gravity, soar upward, and break free into outer space. And even if something goes wrong, the best minds on Earth will do everything possible and impossible to save the situation.

The Red Planet paints a completely different picture. Space is a cramped ship from which, after many months of travel, you finally want to escape. Space is a red-hot fiery mass that can shower you with deadly radiation at any moment. Space is a dead reddish stone desert without oxygen or water. And all the living things around you are the five other members of the crew. But how will these people behave when faced with imminent death? What if a slim chance of salvation appears not for everyone, but only for part of the crew?

Throughout the entire film, except for a brief introduction, there is not a single scene of Earth or on Earth. And all communication with our home planet consists of short, staccato radio messages that arrive with a 40-minute delay. The atmosphere of the film reminds us that space is not only and not so much about the romance of flying to other worlds and “boldly going where no man has gone before.” Space is a hostile environment. Space is cold and lonely.

To survive and adapt in this environment, to preserve what makes us human and not succumb to animal fear, we need more than science and technology. And Shantilas, even though he has relatively little screen time, utters some very important words at the beginning of the film that run like a thread through the entire film.

Ultimately, the film eloquently shows that space is not a backup airfield for humanity. At least not at the current level of technological development. All we have is our blue planet. Without it, we all face an extremely unenviable fate.

As can be seen from the ratings and more than modest box office receipts, this kind of film turned out to be unpopular. Perhaps it turned out to be too gloomy, or perhaps it was incomprehensible to the general audience. The producers drew conclusions and decided that it is possible to philosophize even in low-budget films. An example is Moon 2112, starring Sam Rockwell. And Ridley Scott worked on his mistakes and made a triumphant return to the Martian theme in his The Martian. Everything there is by the book.
