The movie is about former gangster Ho, out of prison, infiltrating a gang of counterfeiters with the help of his cop brother Keith. When the life of its leader Lung begins to threaten, the brothers transport him to New York under the protection of their friend and twin brother of Mark Gore - Ken. Saving Lung, Ken fearlessly fights with hired assassins, sent by the mafia. And following his sense of duty, he leaves his business and goes to Hong Kong to join his friends in dealing with the gangsters on the spot.

A year after the release of the sensational film ‘A Better Tomorrow’, John Woo releases a sequel. Interestingly, Chow Yun-Fat plays one of the leading roles. But, as we know, his character died in the first film, sacrificing himself for his friends. So how will Woo get out of this situation? After all, this is not a prequel. The wonders of Chinese medicine? Too banal. A cybernetic experiment? Absurd. But the elegant directorial move with the twin brother, who decided to break with his dark past and moved to New York, opening a small Chinese restaurant, deserves praise. It is very interesting to compare Yun-Fat's characters. If Mark is a practical melancholic, then Ken, who possesses the same charisma, is also endowed with an excellent sense of humor (just remember the scene with Ho or Kit).

Compared to the first part, the film itself has become much more serious and dramatic, but in addition to this, strangely enough, it has gained momentum. Lang Ti's traditionally strong performance, Leslie Chung and Emily Chu's more mature roles, complemented by the magnificent Dean Shek in the role of the retiring mobster Luna, are worthy of applause. The script, cinematography, and memorable soundtrack (not to mention the franchise's central musical composition) complement each other organically. It is also worth noting the appearance of a number of symbols in the film: the falling star and Kit, Ken throwing Mark's bullet-riddled raincoat over himself. These and many other elements create John Woo's unique style. After watching this film, you will understand that Woo is not only about chic and memorable shootout scenes, but also a person who knows how to simply and accurately convey the emotions and feelings of the characters, emphasizing eternal values such as friendship, love, caring for others, self-sacrifice, loyalty, duty, and honor. While watching, the viewer will experience a whole range of emotions, but in the end, the main one will be hope for that bright future that is conveyed in the film's title, which its characters strive for so much. And despite the many tragic moments, the film turned out to be very life-affirming.

Everyone will find something in it for themselves. But even if someone doesn't like it very much, I can say for sure that it will be remembered for a long time. For my part, I recommend it to everyone, not just fans of Asian cinema, John Woo, Chow Yun-Fat, or action movies.
