Not so long ago, close friends Ho and Mark were authorities in the triad, living by the rules, with some kind of code of rules. But the former went to prison for three years and, after being released, decided to quit, and the latter, crippled during a shootout, is now begging.

The new boss of the criminal group is an outlaw who got out of the six sycophants and with sadistic pleasure is trying to get even with his friends for the previous humiliation, and, in addition, wants to drag Ho's younger brother, a police inspector, into his dirty deeds.

In the early days of his directing career, John Woo, while still a Hong Kong director, started out strangely enough with comedies. They were quite successful, but the name "John Woo" was not yet a household name. Really learned about John when he abruptly changed his role and filmed a fierce crime thriller Right to Life. The movie suddenly gained huge popularity in Hong Kong, and John Woo turned into a real master of action. This movie introduced the fashion for action movies in Hong Kong.

Right to Life is a pure Asian action movie with a traditionally small element of drama. In addition, the movie is based on the classic theme of brothers "on opposite sides of the barricades", where one brother is a gangster and the other is an honest policeman. The gangster returns from prison and tries to turn his life around, but old acquaintances won't let him. The brother cop can't get promoted because of the "dirty" reputation of the brother - a counterfeiter and hates him for it.

Despite the seriousness of the theme, the movie is full of childish and naive dialogues, strongly overplayed actors and overly pathos music, which sometimes plays out of tune. Of all the actors, the best performance was not even Chow Yun-Fat, who played the bandit brother's best friend, but the brother himself, played by Lang Ti. I almost never noticed any overacting from him.

Still, the actors are not the main thing here. Directing and action staging are the main trumps of the movie. Quality staging of action scenes and a lot of spectacular explosions make this movie a great addition to John Woo's directorial career. And even despite some naivety of the plot, it does not annoy, but on the contrary, entices.

Right to Life is a good action movie with beautiful action scenes and Woo's first attempt to conquer the genre. It came out well on the whole, although not without numerous mistakes.
