It was a typical summer day. The holy father was preaching about forgiveness in a small provincial church when a man wearing sunglasses and carrying an automatic weapon entered the “house of God.” Oh no, the armed man was not a cyborg assassin sent from the future to destroy the past. He's not built that way, and it's the early seventies. The man in sunglasses is an ordinary criminal who wants to get even with his partner, “Gromoboy,” for the past. Well, “holy father,” run.

At the same time, nearby, a young and insolent lad with a sly smile never leaving his face steals a car. The lad's name is “Hopscotch,” and he got his nickname because he has a wooden leg. At least, that's what Jeff Bridges' character claims, but something tells me he's lying through his teeth. So, Hopscotch has no particular goal in life, and therefore lives for the moment and prefers to take everything life has to offer. Well, since he has nothing to lose, why not help the priest who has gotten himself into trouble and is being pursued by an armed thug? Nothing. And so, Hopscotch knocks down the armed bandit and takes the “priest” with him, anticipating an unforgettable journey. And yes, the journey will indeed be unforgettable, but will the heroes of the story survive to tell anyone about it? The viewer will only find out the answer to this difficult question if they watch the film to the end.

Despite the fact that this film looks like a crime thriller with a touch of comedy, and plays like a crime thriller with a touch of comedy, it is not a crime thriller. Yes, the main characters, and the not-so-main characters, are outlaws who prefer to take everything and give nothing back. Yes, there will be well-staged fights and shootouts, and the chases are truly breathtaking. Yes, there will be many comical moments in the film that will bring a smile to your face more than once or twice, dear viewer. But despite all this, this film is first and foremost a drama. It is a drama about two people, each of whom was terribly lonely and alone against the whole world, but neither Clint Eastwood's character nor Jeff Bridges' character wanted to admit that they were lonely. Thunderbolt fought in the Korean War, after which he found himself unwanted, so he decided to become a criminal, but even that didn't work out, and the people Clint Eastwood's character called friends were ready to kill him. Therefore, Thunderbolt withdraws into himself and does not want to form any relationships, believing that his fate is loneliness. Hopper, on the other hand, spends his entire life on the move and simply does not have time for such “nonsense” as friendship and love. Friends? Any traveling companion who brightens up part of your journey can be called a friend. Love? What for? You can share a bed with a girl you like and leave at sunset the next morning. No obligations, no attachments, live fast and die young — that's the motto of Jeff Bridges' character. And so, by chance, two lonely travelers meet and then travel together. They know nothing about each other, they don't know where to go, the main thing is to move forward, pressing the gas pedal to the floor, but they are no longer alone. Because, without realizing it, the heroes have met someone who understands them, listens to them, and will always provide a shoulder to lean on. They have found each other. They have found a friend.
