Violence begets violence. The wife and daughter of New York businessman Paul Kersey are victims of a gang of street punk kids. Not relying on the police, Kersey, burning with a thirst for revenge, takes up arms and brings justice himself.

He takes to the streets of New York City at night and starts hunting hooligans and robbers. The fame of the ruthless "New York avenger" spreads all over the country.

A civilized man is one who does not have sex on the beach and hides from danger within the four walls of his comfortable apartment. But one day these impeccably white walls are stained with blood, and then everything changes. Polished to a high gloss world of intelligent architect Paul Kersey collapsed when three degenerates brutally beat his wife and daughter. The first died in hospital without regaining consciousness, the second survived, but she did not regain consciousness in the full sense of the word, too, having earned on the basis of the stress experienced a mental disorder with a difficult name. But this wasn't Paul's only loss. The law-enforcement agencies helplessly threw up their hands and signed their failure, and so died his faith in the protective function of the state and his hope for the triumph of justice.

Left alone with his grief, you can close yourself off and lose interest in life, or you can, imposing your hands in your coat pockets, declare your own vendetta. When civility turns out to be just a pretty word, and when taxes paid on time are not paid back in the expected security, primitive instincts awaken in the upstanding citizen. The guilt for not being able to protect his family awakens in the yesterday's pacifist a militant male essence and is sublimated into a desire to protect from now on everyone and everything. Inspired by the glorious traditions of the Wild West, lengthening his dick with the barrel of a gun, the newborn vigilante takes to the dirty streets of New York. In the best tradition of superhero comics, he rids the Big Apple of petty criminal worms. The menace of gangsters, the public favorite, the star of the six o'clock news, and the headache of the police.

And, like, all in harmony: civilians quietly stroll through deserted neighborhoods at night, and thugs of varying degrees of frozenness get their 20 grams in the heart. But there are two sides to every coin. Righteous anger can transform into obsession, and a hero of his time can turn into a maniac who gets a high from killing and experiences withdrawal from the impossibility of committing them. The first nausea-inducing fear will pass, and the bloodlust will become unquenchable. One can empathize with one city orderly, but if one imagines whole armies of his kind taking to the streets and unleashing their gerillas, it becomes obvious that anarchy is attractive only in its vacuum packaging.

"Death Wish" is neither a Kubrickian study of the causes of violence nor a Scorsese epitaph for yet another generation lost in the hellhole of the metropolis. It's a straightforward tale of one revenge that transcends the personal and acquires social overtones. The moral aspect of the lone hero's vigilante justice is intertwined here with an attempt to peek into the backstage of the state, where the drawbar is invariably turned to the side that is more acceptable to the front pages, and the blindfold over the eyes of Justice looks more like a symbol of connivance than uncompromisingness.
