Review 4K Movie

The success of the first ‘The Running Man’ is inextricably linked to Arnold Schwarzenegger's rise to fame. The film, and indeed the story itself, seemed tailor-made to showcase his brute strength. It was inspired, heavy, and powerful. It was difficult to imagine anyone else playing ‘The Running Man’. And when Edgar Wright took on a new interpretation, it seemed to me to be a foregone failure. Moreover, an actor who was completely unlike Arnold was cast in the lead role.

But the result is a radically different film that never once reminds you of the previous ‘The Running Man’. And that is a great success. We are offered a radically different image of the country and its social structure. The battle with the punitive forces will now take place in open terrain. Instead of the labyrinths of screen pavilions, the hunt now takes place across America.

It should be noted that the America depicted by Edgar Wright corresponds incredibly well to the unimaginable fantasies of conspiracy theorists. There is virtually no middle class in this country. The slums and their impoverished inhabitants are oppressed by a small elite living in comfortable modernist locations. This is a world of unquestioning corporate rule, where might makes right. I suppose this society was created by people who were raised on Game of Thrones and Squid Game.

A logical continuation of this line would be the appearance in the film, unexpectedly for this kind of blockbuster, of a new character for such genre films—a conspiracy theorist blogger. His participation draws a direct parallel to our times, when many quite ordinary events are given a radically different interpretation. And this transition into the “unthinkable” enhances the finale with both mystery and sarcasm.

I really liked the sense of time that Edgar Wright offered in this film. Usually, the active phase is emphasized in chase scenes. But in this film, the anticipation was brought to the forefront. And this is the most interesting, psychologically subtle moment. The man waits, remains relaxed, and paces around the hotel room. But at the same time, we understand the difficult emotions he is struggling with. He is ready at any moment to confront the hunters who have appeared out of nowhere and even face death.

This slowing down of the action works on several levels. We see not just a “survival machine,” but a person who is aware of the fragility of his situation. And this deepens the character of the hero. Suspense also appears - the silence becomes louder than the shots. The emphasis here is not on action, but on anticipation. All this only emphasizes the absurdity of the system - in a world where life has been turned into a show, even moments of peace are part of the game.

This is not “another Running Man,” but a completely new story that deserves attention — even if you love the original. Edgar Wright does not copy the original, but reinterprets it, adding relevant themes: conspiracy theories, social stratification, media manipulation.
