Sokolov steps over every taboo, turning law and morality into an absolute farce. His cinematic references are too straightforward to be taken seriously. He seems to openly mock all the highbrow critics with their talk of archetypes and hidden symbols. The viewer is offered an accessible, popcorn-style product, while the body count begins to rise.

Instead of spouting boring philosophy, he drives his characters into the ventilation maze of a gloomy New York hotel. Its title, ‘Virgil,’ is a direct reference to a journey through the circles of hell. And they run around there like rats in an iron cage, chaotically and pointlessly. This director knows exactly how to entertain an audience. Every time the viewer expects the next cliché, they’ll be fooled.

Every frame, packed with twists, nonstop movement, and a pulsating soundtrack, functions as a machine for the continuous bombardment of the senses. The excess of visual and auditory stimulation deprives the viewer of the opportunity to take a critical stance. There is no mental depth, only a frenzied rhythm. There is no clash of ideas here: the bad guys face off against even worse ones.

Zazi Beetz may fall short of the iconic Ellen Ripley archetype (‘Alien’) as much as she likes. And she is indeed completely unconvincing in this role, but that has absolutely no bearing on anything. Heather Graham’s grimaces are ridiculous, as is the pig’s head on Patricia Arquette. But Kirill Sokolov isn’t aiming for plausibility. Here, simulacra battle one another. It is a pure victory of form over content, achieved with provocative elegance.
