Southeast Asia. The daughter of Wang Wei, a mute handyman, is kidnapped by a criminal gang. Unable to wait for help from the police, he sets out on his own to find her. His unexpected ally is Navin—a tireless journalist whose wife disappeared while investigating the activities of that very same gang. These men from different walks of life must learn to trust and work together, drawing on the hand-to-hand combat skills they acquired through their secret pasts.

The plot is very “complicated.” Child traffickers steal children in an unnamed East Asian country for yet another Epstein-type figure. A female journalist with a background in hand-to-hand combat tracks down the child traffickers’ hideout, but it doesn’t end well for her. Another journalist, Navin—played by Indonesian superstar Joe Taslim, whom you may know from the first *Raid*, the series *Warrior*, the blood-soaked slasher *The Night Is Coming for Us*, and the nostalgic *Mortal Kombat*—sets out to find his missing friend. Meanwhile, in the same region, a deaf-mute Chinese man named Wang Wei ekes out a miserable existence with his daughter. And then it happens—child traffickers kidnap his daughter right before his eyes. Wang Wei sets out on his own bloody crusade, teaming up along the way with that very same journalist, Navin. That, essentially, is the entire plot. Where Navin and Wang Wei learned their devastating kung fu, or what their pasts are—none of that is explained. There’s no mystery to be found here. The only intrigue in the film lies in exactly what ingenious method this pair of avengers will use to take down the next villain.

And this is where the filmmakers display truly Eastern ingenuity. The most terrifying karate action defies the laws of physics. But it’s all practical stunts—no cheesy CGI. Have you seen *The Raid* and *The Night…*? Then you know what I’m talking about. Especially since half the cast came over here directly from *The Raid*. They fight with whatever they can get their hands on: fists, knives, hammers, kukri knives, even bicycles. One-on-one, two against ten, two against two with the added complication of a fifth fighter who battles everyone at once—and while swinging a machete—and a battle in the octagon against two championship contenders at once. ... The realism and flair of the fight scenes are no accident—the director here is Kenji Tanigaki, who, incidentally, started out as a hand-to-hand combat stuntman, starred in many Hong Kong karate films alongside Donnie Yen, and choreographed the fight scenes in *Blade II* and *Blade: The Sword of the Immortal* . One such stuntman, Sam Hargrave, also directed the jaw-dropping *Tyler Rake*, featuring a spectacular single-take stunt sequence of a frantic car chase through the city, while another, Chad Stahelski, the inventor of the “gun-fu” style, who choreographed the fight scenes in *The Matrix* and served as Keanu Reeves’s stunt double there, as well as finishing Brandon Lee’s role in *The Crow* after his death, went on to direct the legendary *John Wick* franchise. Tanigaki, of course, is still playing in a lower league, but there’s no question that this former stuntman knows how to direct action films.

There’s one nuance in *The Furious* that sets it apart from films like *Raid* or *Night*. For all its brutality, Asian-style violence, and realism—as well as the extreme harshness of its themes and plot—the stunts here are laced with irony, humor, and even slapstick, which brings *The Furious* closer to Jackie Chan’s films. No, of course, it’s not as funny as *Armor of God* or *Police Story*—the violence here is brutal and merciless—but it’s also not a plunge into hell like in *Night…*
