It's no secret that these days, every studio is trying to build a successful and long-running franchise, or even several. While some studios achieve this by creating countless sequels to more or less successful new releases, others willingly look to the past and try to revive once-famous franchises for new audiences. The latter vibe is evident in the creation of this film by director Jonathan Entwistle.

It is not surprising that, against the backdrop of the success of the Cobra Kai series, the authors of this film decided to revive The Karate Kid franchise. At the same time, they decided to go with one of the most “painless” ways to do so. In fact, they created a direct sequel to the good old “The Karate Kid” with a very young Ralph Macchio, the aforementioned “Cobra Kai,” and the previous remake/spin-off with Jackie Chan in one of the leading roles, whose universes are brought together.

However, once you start watching this film, you realize that the script has nothing else to offer but a maximum emphasis on nostalgia. In terms of story, the plot practically repeats the previous film with Jackie Chan. Except that the main character is no longer American, but Chinese, and he comes not to China, but to America. Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, veterans of the franchise, play an important role in the story. However, their characters are very nominally written and are not given much screen time. That is why the story feels secondary and its outcome is obvious from the very beginning.

There are also complaints about Jonathan Entwistle's direction. On the one hand, one cannot help but admire how the director managed to recreate the retro atmosphere of the original 1984 film in terms of emotional background and create a lighter film. On the other hand, the film definitely lacks dynamics, and because of this, it seems to be treading water and simply fails to hook the viewer.

As mentioned above, the main focus of this film is on Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio. Both actors really try hard and play their roles well. However, given how their characters are written in the script, both actors simply have nothing to play with and could have performed much better. The film was unlucky with its lead actor. Ben Van certainly tries and seems to be acting. But in my opinion, the character did not suit him at all, and I must admit that you would be hard pressed to find a more photogenic actor. The rest of the actors play their cardboard characters competently, but their work cannot be called bad.
