An excellent historical film.

It’s one of those movies that shows once again that a secret revealed at the wrong time can do far more harm than one kept hidden altogether.

To some extent, the film may echo “The Name of the Rose,” starring Sean Connery.

Great costumes, excellent attention to detail.

Of course, it’s nowhere near as detailed as the bloody “The Passion of the Christ,” but thankfully, the film isn’t marred by the “action-packed” style of Hollywood blockbusters.

Actress Phyllida Law (the sheriff’s wife) gave an excellent performance—she portrayed exactly that kind of blind faith, a faith that goes as far as complete self-sacrifice. Even on the rack in the torture chamber, she continues to believe that this is a mistake...
