The movie shattered my expectations with a kick to the groin. No, it’s not a bad movie—it’s even funny—but it’s a hodgepodge of genres, like candy in mustard. At first, I was expecting a wild horror flick, and that’s exactly where it was headed. We have a prison in Indonesia mired in injustice, where an evil spirit—an artist—has taken up residence, transforming the bodies of his victims into an homage to *The Return from Hell*. But then the plot gradually slides into outright black comedy with parodic fights, unmanly dances, and forced idiocy.

It just so happens that the ghost attacks those who get angry, so the heroes have to entertain themselves in every way possible in inappropriate situations—for example, abruptly switching from a fight to a dance. At the same time, the story carries a clear social and political message, where the harsh conditions in Indonesia are compared almost to Norway’s “paradise-like” prison system, and corruption is portrayed as the only way to survive. Here, wealthy inmates spend their time in complete comfort and even take “days off,” leaving the prison.

That last bit really amused me.

‘Ghost in the Cell’ is an absurd mix of the lighthearted ‘Scary Movie’ and the terrifying ‘From Hell.’ The film subverts expectations: you get scared while preparing for a laugh, and you laugh while preparing for horror. In terms of film quality, Indonesia is in no way inferior to the Koreans, who are so highly praised these days, or the Americans, who are losing ground. This means that perhaps our domestic cinema will also prove itself in the horror genre.
