Review 4K Movie

I decided to revisit one of the classics of the military adventure film genre—especially one with such an intriguing star-studded cast.

This war drama tells the story of how the command decides to form a unit out of war criminals sentenced to long terms of hard labor or even the death penalty to carry out a mission that’s impossible—that is, an extremely difficult task: the men must attack a target on enemy territory and eliminate as many high-ranking German officers as possible, even though D-Day has not yet arrived, and there are absolutely no escape routes. But if the mission succeeds, those who survive will receive amnesty. Intelligence Major Reisman (Lee Marvin) is tasked with training the group and leading them into battle—a man who is brave but reckless, exactly the kind of person the army would send to a court-martial, and yet precisely the kind who can handle a group of criminals.

For most of the film, the major is training and putting the excessively cocky cadets through their paces; at the end of training, they must pass a test and convince the command that they are ready to carry out the mission.

Despite its long runtime, the film is a riveting watch; you grow attached to the Dirty Dozen and feel immense empathy as one after another of them begins to fall by the wayside...
