Review 4K Movie

Usually, when movies about the Middle Ages are made, they’re invariably heroic epics about noble knights or brave commoners overthrowing a corrupt regime. One such example is *The Legend of Robin Hood*, who has literally become a medieval superhero.

In his film *Rise of Robin Hood*, Paul Greengrass decided to completely break the legendary mold and ditch the heroic epic, laying bare all the brutality of the Middle Ages and the contradictions of human nature. Paul Verhoeven had wanted to do something similar in his film *Flesh and Blood*, but the producers intervened, demanding yet another fairy tale about brave knights instead of historical accuracy.

At the center of the film is an ordinary farmer, played by Andrew Garfield. Times are hard; the Black Death has passed, during which the farmer lost his entire family. The royal nobility couldn’t care less about such horrors; they happily revel in a life of luxury, while the son of the late King Richard is losing his mind in his chambers. The nobles have become so brazen that they’ve squandered the entire treasury. They decided to remedy the situation by impoverishing the citizens with new taxes. Those carrying out this order, with their inhumane behavior, provoked the indignation of the entire populace, but the rebellion is accidentally sparked by the Farmer, who is the first to snap and attack the guards. From that moment on, events spiral out of control, as he becomes an unwitting leader who must join a massive uprising determined to overthrow the royal nobility by appealing to Richard’s heir for justice.

In any other movie, we’d be bombarded with grandiose cries of freedom and victory over tyranny, but Paul Greengrass refused to descend into such a cheap heroic spectacle. The peasants in *The Rebel* behave like ordinary folk who, as a massive army, become practically a force of nature that even their leaders can barely control. They don’t don armor or run around with ceremonial, polished spears. Their weapons are farming tools and homemade collective farm contraptions, and their methods of struggle aren’t the pompous recitation of the guilty parties’ sins, but rather the brutal plundering and ruin of all those close to the nobility. Paul Greengrass perfectly conveyed the sheer horror of an enraged mob thirsting for blood under the pretext of a thirst for justice.

The Farmer himself has an extremely ambivalent attitude toward what is happening, for on the one hand, he understands and shares the indignation of the common people, who have been driven to the brink by the arrogance of the royal nobility, while on the other hand, he does not condone the bloody rampage being carried out by the mob that has broken free from all restraint. Andrew Garfield perfectly conveyed the full spectrum of his character’s conflicting emotions. He simply doesn’t need to say what he’s thinking or feeling, since it’s all written all over his face. And the best part is that Farmer isn’t the center of the entire story; he is merely one of several leaders of the uprising, listened to not only as a strong man ready to make decisions, but also as the most level-headed, since—despite the horror unfolding around him—he remains a sensible person capable of articulating precisely what drove people to their terrible actions.

From the very first minutes, *The Rebel* takes you on an emotional roller coaster and keeps you on it until the very end, unafraid to present the story without the trappings of a cheap heroic epic, laying bare what any uprising truly is—not simply a struggle against tyrants, but genuine chaos created by a mob embittered and driven mad by blood, where any decent person would be torn between solidarity and a reluctance to follow such methods. It’s surprising to see a film like this in 2026, when cinema seems to have forgotten what truly mature, uncompromising cinema is all about.
