Based on the novel by former military man Andy McNab, which, in turn, is based in part on the author's personal experience, "Special Service: Alarm Signal" could potentially convey some credibility of the work of those very special services. Yes, this is not Tom Clancy for you, if only because McNab went too far in many ways, but I still want to note the effort. At least on paper: it is in the film form, thanks to strange plot decisions and the desire to wrap everything up in entertainment, that "Special Service" does not deserve a single drop of trust: this work is rather stupid in performance, despite the level of competence of the authors necessary for an action movie, and heartless in details ...

Special Forces operative Tom Buckingham is a typical action hero, a kind of British and less brutal version of John McClane, although he is far from James Bond. He is surrounded by some other, no less one-dimensional action heroes, such as his beloved girl, whom Tom wants to propose to marry during their joint trip to Paris (and whose plot function is to be taken prisoner rather quickly). What Tom and his fiancée weren't counting on was the Black Swans mercenary gang, led by Grace Lewis, the cheeky daughter of a dastardly terrorist. "Black Swans" hijack a train in the middle of a tunnel under the English Channel, after which a confrontation begins.

The creators of "Special Service" clearly strive to please the public, since they added elements from various (usually more thoughtful) works to the film: the novel by the cool but charming warrior Tom recalls the relationship between Bond and Vesper from Casino Royale, and the picture itself, by concept obviously inspired by Die Hard. Even a character similar to the insidious Gruber was added: Andy Serkis played the role of an army mediator, who had previously hired the "Black Swans" to clean up the Georgian village. Naturally, in the course of the plot, the reasons for the seizure of the train, betrayals and conspiracies are revealed, however, all the script moves and images of the characters are mostly monochromatic and limited to rather lengthy conclusions.

The connection with the reality of the "Special Service" is minimal, and the sharp political comments, which the authors wanted to express in passing, are undermined by a cliche script. Nevertheless, when it comes to fighting scenes, the "Special Service" sometimes justifies the place of action. Often the action in the film is stressful due to the limited location. The details of the attack on a train under the English Channel are interesting enough if you think that someone is, in principle, ready for something similar.

Come back, Michael Mann & Paul Greengrass: Intelligence Service: The Alarm Sounds more like the early writings of these directors, only without soul and political analysis. The actual agenda in this film was added, rather, for foppishness. At the same time, in terms of the provocative action movie, not everything is so smooth, because it seems that in the sequel "Under Siege", where the action also took place in a train captured by terrorists, there was more creativity: after all, the plot is not always logical and the action scenes are rather passable. pictures. The production and plot values ​​of "Alarm Signal" are far from unique, but it is not worthwhile to sharply criticize "Special Service": the film is far from low-budget and the authors' hands grow out of the right place.
