Everyone has heard legends about the mighty rulers of heaven and earth - dragons. Fairy tales were built on legends, and you and I grew up on fairy tales. Until now, a dragon seemed to me an evil and savage creature, which had to be killed by a self-respecting noble knight in order to gain the respect of the crowd and the love of a beautiful lady. But cinema works wonders to bring down even the most hardened stereotypes.

The very lively and sincere film "Heart of the Dragon" shows the viewer another side of the notion of dragons. They are the noblest, wisest creatures that appeared on Earth even before the ascent of man to the top of the food chain. They were sworn to watch over mankind invisibly, to be the guardians of the "Code of Precepts". Time, however, has not spared even traditions that have been consigned to oblivion. Along with them disappeared the honor of the knights and the dignity of ordinary people.

In the film you can trace the full range of relationships between dragons and humans. From the enormous dislike on the part of humans as a species, to the deep respect that Julie Christie's (Queen Aislinn) character had for dragons. It was fun to watch the tandem of Knight Bowen (Dennis Quaid) and Draco (a great voiceover by Sean Connery) for the twists and turns in their relationship: enemies, companions, friends.

David Thewlis did a good job on the character, playing the evil and cynical King Aynon. I also liked the supporting role of Brian Thompson (Brock). Wherever you have to smash, break and, may Thompson fans forgive me, walk around with a downcast face, his type is more appropriate than ever. Remember him as Hercules in "Jason and the Argonauts" or a great find - the role of the alien hunter from "The X-Files". In short, I was satisfied with the choice of actors.

A relatively inexpensive picture in this genre simply could not afford to be without decent sets and costumes, appropriate to the time. I can say that everything looks very realistic. Even the most inconspicuous, it would seem, details and touches that experts could have missed, but they didn't cheat and that's good to know. Most of the scenes were shot either in the villages or in nature in almost natural conditions. All this fills the picture with some special spirit of medieval life, when man was not yet so free to dispose of the nature, not to destroy it.

What's nice besides the joy of looking at the picture is the fact that the creators invited Randy Edelman, a talented composer, to play the soundtrack. His hit "To the stars" deserves to be in my collection of the best ost. In all seriousness, I'm saddened by the fact that only a few critics at the time noted Edelman's achievement. The main theme is particularly heartfelt in the final part, when the denouement occurs and Quaid's character has to make a difficult choice. Such a hit is a piece of merchandise.

In closing, I would like to say that no matter how mean and cruel a man is by nature, he can no longer be changed by his upbringing, his mother's love, or the dragon's heart received by a man on death's doorstep. The noble Draco knew this, but, like all honest men, he had one vice, which we call hope. It saves, and it also condemns to death.

In summary. I really enjoyed this movie, which is inherently very kind, despite occasional episodes of acceptable violence. I recommend watching it for children, despite the PG-13 rating. The film teaches us a lot, including such long-forgotten things in our society as honesty, justice and unselfishness.
