Story Movie

King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table embark on an incredible journey to find the Holy Grail. Along the way, they get into the most ridiculous and absurd situations.

Review 4K Movie

King Arthur decided to gather all his knights together, but he couldn't think of a reason why. Suddenly, God himself appeared and ordered them to find the Holy Grail. So they set off, encountering absurd adventures and spawning memes along the way...

“You're the king? I didn't vote for you!” “Who are you, so skilled in the arts of science?” “We are knights who say ‘turnip!’” (in the original, they say “ni” — the same sound used to bleep out profanity on screen). “Let's not remember that someone killed someone else once!” The Trojan rabbit, the holy Antiochian pomegranate, imaginary horses... The list goes on, but there is a risk of giving away serious spoilers. And I really don't want to spoil this movie — you have to see it!

Yes, formally, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a comedic-epic mishmash, the script of which seems to have been written like this: look, we have a parody of the legends of Arthur here, suggest some options! Let's insert a joke about the Grail! How about some banter about class morality? How many cartoonish knights can fit into a 90-minute film? Maybe we can play around with the exploits somehow? And so on. And let's start it all with eye-popping titles, which in themselves are of no interest to anyone, but we'll make the voice-over commentary so memorable that they'll remember it!

They remembered. They appreciated it. The Holy Grail became a classic, not despite its flaws, but because of them. And there are flaws. There is very little main plot; it serves only as a pretext for jokes. Pianos regularly play in the bushes. And the jokes themselves would be torn to shreds in other films, branded as tasteless and stupid. Seriously, build a movie out of this? No, not seriously! It's a parody, so go ahead, go for it! Let's do silly things, laugh, parody! And anyway, this is British humor. That explains everything — both the general absurdity and the fact that, despite all its tastelessness, the film is enjoyable to watch. This is, perhaps, a true anthem to humorous Britain. And its heroes are British knights, which makes sense. Not to mention that “The Holy Grail” is one of the few successful films about King Arthur in general.

Of course, some of the scenes in the film appeared due to the usual lack of budget (hello, imaginary horses!). Hence the rather unkempt picture, the silly-looking armor... Well, whatever. I don't really feel like complaining. Except maybe the sun on the royal armor raises some questions — there should be a red dragon there. You can't justify that as a parody. However, there is only one such blunder in the film.

The actors honestly tried to ham it up with taste. Everyone had fun, everyone understood that it was just one big joke. And watching them ham it up is also fun.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a film that probably only the British could have made. Who else could turn a stream of nonsense and bad taste into a comedy masterpiece for all time? Terry Gilliam and company did a great job. And it's pointless to take it seriously — it's just a big joke! That pretty much explains it all.
