Jack is a popular radio host. He has a sense of humor, sarcasm, and professional cynicism, which eventually turns into tragedy: one of his regular listeners took his ironic advice: he walked into a crowded cafe and unloaded a full clip into unsuspecting customers.

Shocked, Jack quits his job and goes on a binge, sinking to the bottom of despair. This is when he meets Parry, a homeless drifter, a former history professor, who draws him into an amazing world of his own fantasies, where medieval knights parade through the dreary streets of a huge city, and skyscrapers are transformed into majestic castles.

Together they set out on a quest for the Holy Grail...to the borough of Manhattan.

If you ask the average person which director is now the king of crazy fantasy, the answer is undoubtedly Tim Burton. There are goths singing along, remembering Sleepy Hollow, and freshly hatched Alice fans. However, personally, I've always been more attracted to Terry Gilliam, because he wraps true stories about the burdens of human passions into fabulous metaphors. He is perhaps the only one with so much tragedy and complex human psychology behind the delirium and laughter.

"Kingfisher" is not an easy movie, although if you look at the story lines individually, there is nothing special about them. A former radio star drops the occasional word, loses his job and turns into a drunken loser. A university professor watches his wife get her brain blown out, then safely goes insane. They meet in a junkyard to help each other overcome their guilt, get back on their feet, and find love. It seems trivial - and oh the horror, what a moralistic manipulative drag this could have turned into under another director's direction! But Terry Gilliam knocks the seriousness down a notch by putting things into a wireframe of convention and putting bright masks on the characters. Robin Williams becomes the Robin Hood of the streets, Jeff Bridges the Chosen One, and both are chased by the Terror in the guise of the Red Knight. The female characters are also very different: the effervescent Mercedes Rule and Amanda Plummer, touching in her awkwardness.

At first glance, of course, the film is delirious and incomprehensible. But behind every mask there are genuine emotions and conflicts, so it's impossible to remain indifferent while watching. Sometimes you laugh for no apparent reason, sometimes you almost cry. In the end, together with the main characters, you find your Holy Grail and breathe a sigh of relief. This is one of the few films where the good ending doesn't seem plaintive and contrived.

Happiness is out there somewhere, in the little things. It's caught with a fishing rod and fine fishing line, not bought with royal riches. It's important to appreciate the people around you, and then lying in the park on the grass will be the most pleasant thing in the world.

The film is filled with goodness and gives - for once - inner harmony. At the end, you want to sing "I like New York in June" and give everyone a friendly pat on the back.
