The first film based on Michael Ende's novel, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, was a success, and six years later, a sequel was released. Almost the entire cast changed, with only Thomas Hill, who played Mr. Koreander in the first film, remaining. Jonathan Brandis played the lead role. This was his first leading role in a film. In the 90s, he was a teen idol.

The film was directed by Scotsman George Miller, who attempted to adapt the second part of Ende's book. The boy Bastian once again finds a fairy tale book, from the pages of which the Queen of Fantasia asks for his help. He receives the amulet Auryn, a medallion in the form of black and white snakes devouring each other, capable of granting his every wish. But with each wish, Bastian loses one of his memories. This is even visualized in the film: memories turn into balls in a washing machine.

The images of the inhabitants of Fantasia are copied from the first film (although there are some new ones, again in puppet form). The dragon Falcor is still charming, and Jonathan Brandis plays him well. But it's not the same. Yes, the authors tried to highlight the ethical conflict from the book between desires and memory, expanded Bastian's father's storyline, and introduced the villainous sorceress Xayde, who is opposed by Bastian and Atreyu. But by all measures, the sequel is weaker than the first part.

It's a pretty average second part of the classic fantasy based on Michael Ende's book. In 1996, the third part will be released with another child star of the 90s, Jason James Richter (Free Willy), in the role of Bastian. But this film will no longer have anything to do with Ende's book except for the names of some characters, and even that connection is very weak.
