Set in war-torn 15th century Kyoto, on the eve of the Onin War, the movie centers on a band of outlaws led by Hyoe, a scoundrel whose lethal sword skills place him at the tip of the spear in a deadly uprising against the corrupt Shogunate and its army, led by former friend-turned-archrival Doken.

Samurai Fury (Muromachi Outsiders) is a modern interpretation of Seven Samurai, but it doesn't quite capture the depth of the classic film. The film attempts to combine social satire, a coming-of-age story, and a large-scale popular uprising, but due to frequent mood swings and a blurred plot, it comes across as a disjointed work.

The plot centers on the ronin Hasuda Hyoe, who first raised a rebellion during the Muromachi period. He takes the bold but promising young Saizo under his wing and begins to train him. The first part of the film focuses on their relationship and the student's development.

The main flaws of the film are the lack of a clearly defined enemy, the vague motivations of the characters, and the constant tonal shifts between comedy, drama, and action. The second part turns into a chaotic attempt to recreate the structure of Seven Samurai: the script becomes oversaturated with new characters, and the narrative loses its clarity. The action scenes look bland, with shaky camera work and poor computer graphics.

At the same time, the acting, especially by Kento Nagao, deserves praise, and the atmosphere of the Muromachi period is recreated quite convincingly. As a result, Samurai Fury remains an ordinary, unremarkable action film: it does not cause strong disappointment, but it does not offer anything truly memorable either.
