Jerusalem, 26 AD. Two childhood friends, the Jew Ben-Hur and the Roman tribune Messala, meet again as adults after a long separation. Messala asks Ben-Hur to name the most ardent opponents of Roman rule, but Ben-Hur cannot betray his own people and refuses, which leads to conflict.
