Story Movie

Victor Piver is an eccentric, xenophobic factory owner rushing to his daughter’s wedding. On the way, he is accidentally drawn into a political conspiracy and taken hostage by the Arab revolutionary Sliman. Fleeing from assassins and the police, the two are forced to dress up as Hasidic Jews and pretend to be the famous Rabbi Jacob—a favorite of the Parisian Jewish community, returning to France for the first time in 30 years. While the entire neighborhood gives the “rabbi” a grand welcome, Piver’s wife thinks her husband is cheating on her, and the police are convinced he is a murderer.

"The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob" is perhaps the greatest French farce of all time and the pinnacle of Louis de Funès' career. Director Gérard Oury created a film that could claim the title of the comedy with the highest density of gags per minute of screen time—even before "Blazing Saddles" and "Airplane!" were released.

The film’s greatest strength is that it conveys a sincere message of tolerance and respect for other cultures, yet never preaches or lets that message get in the way of the nonstop fun. Louis de Funès is at his absolute best here: his character goes from an irritable racist and xenophobe to a man who is forced to literally step into the shoes of the very person he despised.

The finale, with its mad chase through the streets of Paris and the scene at the chewing gum factory, is a classic of world cinema. The film still feels fresh and funny even today, 50 years later.
