Flash Gordon 4K 1980 Ultra HD 2160p
Strange energy waves have shifted the Moon from orbit, causing a total solar eclipse on Earth. Human life is in danger. Doctor Zarkov persuades the star of American football Flash Gordon and the lovely Dale to make a desperate jump into hyperspace with him - on the planet Mongo, where the devastating energy waves come from.

The planet is ruled by Emperor Ming the Ruthless and his daughter, the evil beauty Aura. The heroes have only one opportunity to save Earth - to destroy Ming, uniting the princes of this distant planet who are at war with each other...

Review 4K Movie

The birds are attacking the castle of heaven. At the last moment, the defensive field is disabled. The seconds are counted down to save the Earth. At the head of the attack is Flash Gordon, symbolizing a regime change. The totalitarian regime of the ruthless Ming must fall. Obviously, the next rulers must be Prince Barin and Princess Aura...

Hardly a modern comic book lover will like this simple movie. An unexpected trip to another planet with Professor Zharkov gives the resemblance to 'Princess of Mars'. Ruthless Ming and his regime is the middle of the evolutionary journey from 'Star Wars' to 'Cosmic Eggs'. The theme of protective fields and costume design will resonate with Lucas' creation. The birds will remind Barbarella, the angular protagonist, Superman. And the cinema itself, from costume design to initiation rites and constant fights, will anticipate the 'Dune' (a good thing - one producer). But in all its utilitarianism, this film has its own charisma.

First of all - the tape does not pretend to anything particularly. Balancing on the verge of a combination of fiction and rigid irony these days, it looks almost an art house. It is now postmodernism in the close embrace of parodies enslaved the hearts of viewers. Back then, Dino de Laurentis experimented, selecting the right tones, elegantly saturating the color scheme of the film. And it was outstanding for those years. For example, the planet of Prince Beyrin (Timothy Dalton) was saturated with several very well chosen shades of green. The invasion of birds and the fight was also very impressively coloristically defeated. Although, now in the age of special effects, all these achievements may not be noticed anymore. A breakthrough for that time was also the musical accompaniment - wonderfully performed by the Queen band. The selection of worthy European actors complemented the picture. Belligerent Timothy Dalton, passionate Ornella Mutti, intellectual Topol and such a different Max von Sudov quite easily entered into simple images, endowing them with their own unique charisma. Of course, the two invited Americans were not too famous. Melody Anderson and Sam Jones are mostly known to TV fans. But I think the choice of de Laurentis was fully justified. The actors may not be too talented, but they seemed to be a perfect match. Taking risks and inviting Redford and Diane Keaton, for example, probably didn't allow a budget.

Unlike many modern film comics, the picture does not look heavy. It's filled with many vivid episodes. As I wrote before, the Prince Barin's initiation struck me - a complete analogy with the Dune (the hand stretches out into the hollow in the hope that the poisonous insect will not bite). I also remember a short trip through the Flash Gordon swamp. The elegant battle between Bairin and Gordon was avant-garde in every way. Constantly swinging sphere, whips and suddenly coming out spikes seemed to me very ingenious. But the most important thing is that the creators of the film from the beginning to the end withstand a relaxed, semi-joking tone. And even though this creation by de Laurentis is not much revered, like his football club Napoli, it seems to me original, elegant and competitive.
