Many millennia ago, a group of superhumans with superpowers, the Eternals, was sent to Earth from the planet Olympia. Since prehistoric times, they have protected humanity from the attacks of terrible monsters of deviants, but any other interference in the development of civilization was forbidden to them.

Beginning of the 21st century. Several centuries have passed since the last deviant was destroyed when, after a strange earthquake, a new monster is suddenly announced. Now the Eternals living in different parts of the planet will again have to rally their forces in order to confront a new threat.

Understanding the intricacies of the human soul, director Chloe Jao ("Land of Nomads", "The Rider") tried in the new film to show the author's view of the small inner world of the hero through the prism of a superhero theme on a universal scale. The Eternals is the most ambitious story, covering the vast expanses of numerous galaxies, where the theme of the birth of the Earth is also touched upon. In other words, the film touches on some divine power about the creation of the world and the meaning of humanity. And everything would be fine, but only from a visual point of view, this picture is extremely difficult to call an epic spectacle, because the story is shown within the framework of a special minimalism, where almost all actions take place either in a limited space (house, apartment, pavilion, spaceship), or in deserted environment, including a few people for a look (seashore, forest, desert, steppe, night street). It is not worth hoping for impressive destruction and the scope of the events taking place, because the authors did not seek to follow in the footsteps of The Avengers. This is not only a different story, but also a completely different approach to understanding the artistic narrative, where there is not even a specific antagonist. In this case, the emphasis is on the internal enemy, which can bring much more tragic consequences than some crazy villain on the streets of the city, destroying everything in its path. Action scenes look boring and secondary, as if this is not a two hundred million blockbuster, but a low-budget film with limited features, because of which the production had to be somehow optimized. Another shortcoming is the impressive number of heroes per square meter, where the authors actually had to sacrifice some in order to talk in more detail about others. As a result, a superficial look at the characters slips in the plot, which the authors intended in every possible way to decorate with vivid dialogues, and the director with the charisma of approved actors. While watching, the thought sometimes slipped: “What is Angelina Jolie doing in this film, who probably said the least words and didn’t do any significant deeds all the time?” Absolutely any actress could play such an insignificant role. But then it turns out that she will get the opportunity as a director to make one film from the Marvel universe.

Of course, the proposed volume of a large-scale story is difficult to fit into one full-length film, even with a running time of two and a half hours. With so many new characters, where everyone deserves their full attention, a serial format would be best suited, and the visual limitations of the film only strengthened this statement. Instead of action, the director in every possible way focused on the state of mind of the characters, their experiences, self-realization and the search for simple human happiness, so the film has a lot of dialogues about life and love within the framework of an eternity-long fate.

All in all, fans of action-packed action should be prepared for some disappointment, while fans of heartfelt melodramas wrapped in fantastic storytelling will have something to look forward to thanks to a good cast, great cinematography and quality directorial work that gave the film a special atmosphere and aesthetic unlike any other superhero blockbuster .
