Story Movie
The world has never seen such skillful adventurers: the dexterous pickpocket Mr. Wolf, the skilled safecracker Mr. Snake, the cold-blooded master of disguise Mr. Shark, the flashy and muscular Mr. Piranha, and the witty top-class hacker Miss Tarantula. However, even the smartest criminals sometimes make mistakes. In order to save himself from jail, gang leader Mr. Wolf is forced to go to extreme measures: the "Bad Guys" must change for the better. Or pretend to? But when a new villain threatens the town, can Mr. Wolf convince the others to really become... good guys?
Review 4K Movie
About 10 years ago, watching movie trailers, I never thought the studios would disappoint me, give me something I didn't need, or not what I was shown in the ads. Almost always the best part of the trailer was taken away and saved for the wow effect. Now, however, I shudder my heart out for every good idea that is either destroyed or made into mediocrity these days. "Bad Boys," unfortunately, is a perfect example.
Admittedly, the marketers managed to catch me this time, because with such a great idea falling below the "excellent" level, it was extremely difficult. At least I thought so - all the drama I had come up with before the premiere with Mr. Wolf and his dilemma of choosing between his new life, his new love, and his friends was supposed to be a MINIMUM "good." The result is MAXIMUM "good."
If this is all pressure from Universal Studios, that's just sad. If it's all the director's initiative, then Dreamworks should be kicked for this kind of shoddy work. It's worth noting that director Pierre Perifel has only one short film under his belt, Bilby, which wasn't particularly original, and that fact gave it away as well. However, this does not mean that screenwriters need to write mediocrity. And it is mediocrity that is written.
To pick on the fact that there are talking animals living in this world along with humans would be silly. We have "Bo Jack the Horse" as an example. Far more questionable is the brain process of the people in this society. Before it premiered, the movie heavily echoed "Megamind," which is okay in terms of "prejudiced society treats everything new and strange looking with skepticism." In "Bad Guys," the basic conflict between society and gangster-beasts is questionable by virtue of the fact that they are supposed to be villains by nature. But for all that, the foxy governor somehow raises no questions in anyone's mind. Maybe if the characters had a backstory of their formation, this would be believable, but there isn't one. And there is no drama here either. To be exact, it kind of is, but was it necessary to shove in some trashy basic aspects that the viewer will even be lazy to react to?
To the response, "We wanted to make Tarantino for kids, and there's no drama in his films," I have two arguments. First, making Tarantino and Guy Ritchie for kids is great, of course, but the film should be a work of its own. It shouldn't just consist of references to something. "Shrek" and "Megamind" being parodies of Disney fairy tales and superheroics were original in their own way, but somehow not "Bad Boys." Secondly, if Tarantino and Guy Ritchie had written similar scripts, I think their films would not have been so star-studded.
On the plus side, I'd like to point out that the characters' speech is not badly written, and the action is quite brisk and strong. True, the latter is rather the merit of the animators and directors, who know how to entertain the viewer much better than the screenwriters. I will say this: as long as the movie isn't trying to teach you anything, everything looks good.
If you thought from the trailer that the guinea pig would be the villain, but immediately dismissed that move because it's so lazy and boring that the creators are unlikely to take it on... then you're wrong. Oddly, they didn't reveal this mystery in the trailer, apparently thinking we wouldn't guess. That's a shame. If they had laid out the cards right away, we wouldn't have inflated our expectations to the level of a story without a main antagonist, about thugs that society, due to its bias, has forced to go bad.
Want an example of unexpected twists? That the fox would be a ninja in black from the trailer everyone understood. Wouldn't it be surprising, and even funny, if they turned out to be two different characters? This twist is free to you, and they get thousands of dollars for their "surprise."
In fact, the only scene that was the true soul of this movie was the dance scene to the wonderful original track "Good Tonight" - they didn't even make references to the famous scene from Pulp Fiction here (but they could have).
I'm not putting the review in red because it's not all bad. Unlike "Turbo," "Guys" at least works on a basic level. And unlike "Baby Boss" and "Spirit Unruly," this movie has some really cool animation that pulls it off the bottom. But audiences have long since figured out that picture alone is clearly not enough.
"Why bother? People will eat it up!" Well, yeah, the first time around, maybe it will. Just speaking of the sequel, rumors of which are already wandering around the web, one has to ask - why should we go for it? Not a single storyline that could be milked in the sequel, not a single character story that needs clarification. And speaking of their general attitude toward writing, I don't really believe they'll do the work on mistakes. If there's one thing "Baby Boss 2" taught me, it's that if you turn a blind eye to the flaws the first time, they won't do better the second time-they'll do several times worse.
What keeps me from enjoying most modern films is the fact that I know the creators MIGHT have done better, but they didn't. I know this because even in my head the story came out much more entertaining. And that's how all modern Hollywood works now: mediocrity and worse.
I've heard of players rebelling against the studio for overstating the scripted quality of the game. Maybe we should have such a revolt with the movies, too. I think it's about time.
