Review 4K Movie

'Zootopia 2' is one of the animated films I've been most looking forward to this year. Even though the first film came out nearly 10 years ago, the adventures of the one-of-a-kind duo—the fox and the rabbit—have left a lasting impression, transcending the boundaries of time. And these aren’t just words, but in a way a reflection of reality, if you look at the age range of the audience: from children born after the original was released to serious young adults who saw the premiere during their school or college years. Be that as it may, the continuation of Hops and Wilde’s adventures could be an excellent pre-New Year’s gift (winter is near) and exactly the kind of story you’ll want to return to again and again. Why? Let’s take a closer look.

The visuals. They’re truly impressive. Setting aside the fact that I watched the film in IMAX 3D, the abundance of diverse landscapes is truly impressive. Above the water—below the water, above the ground—below the ground: the action on screen doesn’t let the characters relax, and it doesn’t let the audience’s eyes rest either. Want to see snow, a desert, mountains, a river, and all of that in less than two hours? You’ve come to the right place, and this isn’t National Geographic.

Music. “Zootopia” stays true to tradition: the main theme, sung by Shakira, is performed by the gazelle Gazelle. Beyond that, the musical accompaniment to the dramatic moments is simply magnificent. There’s a moment in the film that can bring a tear to your eye, and the weight of that tear is directly tied to the composer’s work. “Try Everything” has become firmly associated with the Zootopia universe, which is more than can be said for the main theme of the second film—the song “Zoo.” Oh well.

The plot. And it’s the cherry on top of the anthropomorphic life celebration. Hopps and Wilde find themselves caught up in a conspiracy whose threads lead almost to the very origins of Zootopia. Along the way, they’ll make new friends, face betrayal, and rethink their relationship. And? Can I wrap this up? Yes, but no. I’ll start with the new characters: Harry the snake and Nibbles the beaver. In my opinion, they weren’t developed well enough and serve mainly to advance the plot. But what deserves attention is the relationship between the two main protagonists and partners. In this installment, the creators decided to add more dynamics and introspection to their dynamic (sometimes even too much). Having witnessed the budding friendship between Hops and Wild in the first part, here we encounter the first serious crisis in their partnership. The writers tell us straight up how hard it can be to say the right words to someone close to us, to express gratitude, and to show how much they mean to us. Instead of an open and honest conversation, things turn out completely differently than expected, and the only “right” (or “simple”) thing seems to be acknowledging that we’re different. But differences aren’t always a hindrance. The cornerstone is the choice: whether it concerns the desire to be together no matter what, or the desire to defy a family that doesn’t appreciate you. In any case, facing the consequences is inevitable. Even if the choice hasn’t been made.

I’ve been waiting a long time for this (animated) film. I guess that was my goal. What will I do in the morning? Just the usual. But I’d like to hope that a little bit of warmth will still find its way into my life after watching it.
