There are several video games that have proven so viable that they have become literally beyond generations, and their influence has spread beyond computer entertainment. There are few of them and certainly among them there is a place for "Mortal Kombat". First released on slot machines in 1992, this series made a strong impression on bloodthirsty children's minds: firstly, the characters in it represented digitized versions of real people, and secondly, the blood, dismembered and notorious fatalities pleased the players. Mortal Kombat became a big name in the genre of fighting games, and then it also spread to the world of cinema and television: our favorite film by Paul W. Anderson, a bad sequel to it and a no less bad animation prequel, a short animated series for kids, one more short-lived live action series, limited online series. And among all the heroes, Scorpio, the most deadly ninja hero, was especially popular. The Mortal Kombat Legends cartoon with an entire R rating offers a perspective not previously explored in the treasures of Mortal Kombat - a rethinking of the original Mortal Kombat with emphasis on this character.

A member of the Japanese ninja clan named Hanzo Hasashi was killed by his enemies from the Lin Quay clan. His family also dies at the hands of enemies. In hell, Hanzo has risen as a Scorpio. In his desire to take revenge on his killer Sab-Ziro, Scorpio leaves for the island of Shan Tsunga, where the first Mortal Kombat tournament is held. The fate of the Earth hangs in the balance and the question arises: for whom or for what will Scorpio fight?

From the point of view of history, Scorpio’s Revenge is a mixture of something new and something old. Anyone who has played games or watched the 1995 New Line Cinema version will recognize the plot decisions before they even begin. In many ways, Scorpio’s Revenge simply copies early material with slightly different plot moves, albeit depending on the mythology of the main series. At times it seems outdated or predictable, but the film is still damn interesting. This is partly due to the shift of attention to Scorpio. As a rule, MK stories tell about a good team led by Liu Kang. Here the narrative is a bit biased, and while the events of the tournament occupy a central place in the plot, the person of Scorpio is not just “for show”. Rather, the attention of the audience is drawn to the never explored aspect of the events that led Hanzo to the personality of Scorpio, and what this means for other characters. This helps the plot look fresh, not to mention the fact that this can lead to several unexpected turns.

Although the name of Scorpio is put in the title, it goes to the sideline until the end of the film as the tournament begins. The film’s biggest problem is that it is trying to make the epic duel for survival more significant than the personal story of Scorpio. As a result, everything ends with the fact that neither the first nor the second is given their due.

Horrible deaths, bloody lawlessness and other joys of life, for which we love Mortal Kombat so much - all this is in Scorpio’s Revenge. Fans will be happy; those who are superficially familiar will also be happy to see a history update. The narrative is smooth, the characters are interesting, and the animated film itself is nostalgic. Your move, rebooting the franchise in 2021!
