Story Movie

Gifted high school student Kenji Koiso accepts an invitation from a girl to visit her family. If only he knew how it would end. First he has to play the role of the girl's boyfriend in front of her relatives. Then he has his account stolen for Oz, a virtual reality where people not only play and have fun, but also do serious things like shopping and doing business.

Review 4K Movie

Undoubtedly, Miyazaki and Shinkai have been listed first in Japanese animation for a decent amount of time. The debate is only around these two figures. And if Miyazaki stands out by the general madness of fantasy and fairy tale, regularly tearing fans the template, Shinkai is characterized by a point and very strong stab in the heart, pressing on the strongest human feelings every time. That's actually all that needs to be said about them to give them a background role.

And on their background Hosoda Mamoru seems to be some kind of entrepreneur rather than a creative person. He doesn't come up with the plots himself, but expresses the superiority of the “machine” 3D style over classical drawing. And he also has that look... Brrr!...

So if you need to put in the main tasks of emphasis on the Western audience - better candidate than Mamoru is unlikely to be found. It is not known whether it is professionalism or vice versa, but he manages to make any picture, no matter how deep and complex the meaning, to make a cartoon for the very young. Somehow this idealism helped him to successfully resurrect the classic of Japanese literature “The Girl Who Conquered Time”. And somehow with that idealism he began his journey, raising many, many digimon cartoons that turned much of his individuality into a succulence with the audience.

And “Summer Wars” turned out to be a fun romp through the canons and favorite patterns, seasoned with quoting classics and on the conscience of the music. “Summer Wars” is by no means original. On the contrary, it is copied from his own “Digimon”, it is enough to substitute the right parallels. And the futuristic picture of the world combines the favorite Japanese “incommensurable”: the old clan with the matriarch at the head, and virtual reality in the spirit of the third Spy Kids.

Almost a third of the planet sits on the Net, which is called “OZ Land”. A curious hint, except that no one makes you wear green glasses. By the way, all these networks in cartoons are always evil, if they are not the basis of the universe. That's how conservatives will always feel about progress. But for children - the best.

By the way, the “Summer Wars” - a picture-maximalist, like any child, which is expressed in almost everything. The main villain is so big and scary and seemingly invincible. To defeat the villain - so the whole world. Family - so necessarily an ancient clan. To cry, so that the floor floods. Thinking makes your nose bleed. It's not a bad thing, but it's not a good thing either. Of course, the pleasant music plunges you into childhood, but the weirdos from the virtual world bring back memories of cute Pokémon - it's just a childhood trauma.

And so, using a charming in its absurdity maximalism, Mamoru turns a good children's fiction into a good children's fantasy. It somehow reaches for the language itself, given that there's nothing fantasy about it, except for the premise, of course. Characters of all kinds are just in abundance, even there is someone to hold on to with a glance. The main character, as in the rule book, the most conventionally ordinary schoolboy. The heroine is the most beautiful schoolgirl. But there is no school. There are nerds, there are bullies, but there is no school...

Instead, for the hardened connoisseurs there will be a monologue in the spirit of “if we all hold hands, everything will definitely work out!”. It's just a wild bout of hilarity, even though you can't turn away from the rotten thoughts screaming banality. The acidic 3D virtual world, the blanks for which were boldly taken from Mamoru's early work “Superflat Monogram,” is heartwarming. And the family, in which the author embodied a bit of chauvinism under the plot end - all the female part grieved, when as valiant men trying to save the world.

Mamoru either guessed so, or accidentally turned out that “Summer Wars” will have no other Japanese competitors from Shinkai with Miyazaki. And after them, Mamoru confidently goes after them in terms of success. In fact, he's on his way to the Oscars.
