Suzu, a 17-year-old high school student, is being raised by her father and can't seem to come to terms with her mother's early death. Since she and her mother loved to sing, Suzu has since given up singing, but has started writing songs. The girl decides that in the virtual space U, where there are 5 billion users, she will become a different person, and creates her complete opposite - a beautiful singer named Belle. In this new reality, the girl quickly becomes popular and gains millions of fans. One day her virtual concert is disrupted by a mysterious user in the form of a dragon, and Suzu decides to find out who he really is.

Mamoru Hosoda is one of the few Japanese directors who always hold the bar for his work. His new film is no exception.

Looking at the posters and trailers, you'd think this was a classic love story. To be more precise, a new interpretation of 'Beauty and the Beast'. But knowing who the author is, we should look for a different kind of bottom. Which is what happens in this movie. Hosoda poses questions of morality, love, the modern world, communication, friendship, family. In doing so, he cleverly masks most of the anime as a love story, and then takes an abrupt turn (which, in fact, could have been read), changing the degree and tension. Overcoming and finding oneself are the main tenets of this film.

The author tried to take the best things from his past works and skillfully put them together in the new one. It did not come out perfectly, but he managed to touch the right threads of the soul. The virtual world is very colorful, although not too live (which is logical, but in the context of the anime does not fully work). There is no question about the drawing and graphics (in some places, it is so beautiful indescribable). And what are the songs here (the final one on a tear). Watch only in the original with subtitles.

It's not the author's best work, but it's clearly worth watching. One could feel that he wanted to add a lot of things, to reveal a lot of themes. It was a bit muddled at times, but it didn't spoil the viewing experience. A beautiful cautionary tale.
