Review 4K Movie
'Elvira: Mistress of the Dark' can be considered a model of black comedy, on par with such a cult movie as 'The Addams Family'. Although the picture is already long-lived, since it was released in 1988, it is still one of the best in its genre, and all thanks to the light, really funny humor, which does not cross the border of vulgarity and of course the performer of the main role, who created the image of a sexy witch. Strange, but the movie, which retains its originality to this day, could not pay for itself at the box office, although, as time shows, Elvira has become one of the most memorable extraordinary characters in cinema. Be that as it may, and this comedy will long continue to be in demand among viewers, as it has long become a classic.
The script of the movie, in the writing of which Cassandra Peterson herself took part, turned out to be very fascinating. The movie became a kind of parody of old horror movies, in which there will certainly be a place for an old mansion, which keeps all sorts of secrets. What is most interesting, at the very beginning of the picture Cassandra played almost herself, because long before the release of 'Elvira: Mistress of the Dark' she has already appeared in the image of the lord of darkness just being a TV program, which showed black and white thrash-horrors. Since the main character is nothing but a witch, the director decided to have a good laugh at the common stereotypes that are firmly established in relation to these characters, and he does it, it must be said, successfully. In the picture there are caricatures of such eternal companions of every owner of magical abilities, as a book of spells, which will bring the protagonist a lot of trouble, which served as the emergence of one of the most memorable comic situations and a pet, presented in the form of not the usual black cat, but a funny white poodle. In addition, James Signorelli uses allusions to the events of 1692. The movie is set in Massachusetts, where the witch hunt began, and the scene with the bonfire is a hint to the Salem trial. But only all this is presented not seriously, but with a lot of witty jokes. The movie itself is watched in one breath, because it does not have a single slack in the plot, and to everything else, it has a certain meaning. Namely not to be afraid to be yourself, even if you are a 'black sheep' in the surrounding society, because, in any case, there will be people who will support you, and to trade your individuality in order to become one of the representatives of the 'gray mass' - it's stupid.
From a technical point of view, of course, the picture is already outdated. If the makeup is still not bad (This, in the first place, refers to the negative character), then the special effects are not any good. In the scenes of the movie, where now would certainly be used computer graphics, in the course go cartoon inserts, peculiar to that time. Fortunately, they are not so often seen on the screen, so they do not spoil the positive impressions of the movie.
Naturally, the best acting belongs to Cassandra Peterson, who is able to delight not only with her specific appearance, but also by being an uninterrupted source of humor. Now it is difficult to find a comedian who, like her, would have a perfectly developed facial expression and emit so much genuine charm. It is also worth noting the game of the main antagonist of the movie - Morgan Sheppard, who could well become one of the heroes of some horror movie. It is even hard to imagine who would have coped with the role of an unfriendly uncle better, given that the actor looks very peculiar. But Daniel Green did not distinguish himself in any way - was mediocre and served only as an addition to the main character. You can not pass by the actors who were given minor roles, but at the same time very bright. Susan Kellerman, Pat Brown, Kurt Fuller and Edie McClurk starred in far more than one picture, except that their characters always appear only in episodes, which still does not prevent them from creating a memorable image every time.
'Elvira: Mistress of the Dark' can be referred to such movies that you revisit time after time, but they can never get boring. It was and still is one of the best in its genre, and the image of the Lord of Darkness will live in the memory of the audience for a long time.
