A lazy, good-natured bachelor uncle is asked to take care of his nephews during their parents' family crisis. They turn to Uncle Buck out of desperation: there is no one else to leave the children with. But with a little luck and a lot of love, Uncle Buck manages to surprise everyone.

It is assumed that by the age of forty a person should settle down, have a family, children, a stable job, and already start experiencing a midlife crisis. But there are those who prefer not to burden themselves with obligations, and choose the easy way out, hoping that everything will work itself out.

The penultimate directorial effort from the wonderful John Hughes, who has given us so many great movies for all generations, is about an infantile adult who one day has the responsibility of looking after his three nephews.

“- I quit smoking cigarettes. And now I've switched to cigars. I have a five-year plan. First I'll quit cigarettes, then I'll switch to cigars, then I'll smoke a pipe, then chewing tobacco and finally nicotine gum.”

An oddball, irresponsible middle-aged man with a gambling addiction and an odd sense of humor is how the main character Buck Russell appears to us. He doesn't see himself as a family man, but the enthusiasm with which he responds to his brother's request and the original approach to the short-term upbringing of his children show that sometimes a man doesn't know himself completely. For their sake, he even jeopardizes the relationship with the woman he loves. John Candy was an amazing actor. Despite his good-natured appearance and sweet smile, here he looks very convincing every time he utters phrases of a real maniac, wanting to frighten someone.

“- Hi, mom. Next time you leave in the middle of the night, why don't you hire a killer to watch the house?”

From the first minutes of the movie, it's clear that Tia's eldest daughter is not thrilled about the move and the fact that her parents devote all their time to work rather than their children only exacerbates the situation. Conflict with the newly arrived uncle is inevitable, but it's fun to watch them squabble, as it's interesting to see who will be more stubborn and when they will realize that they can learn a lot from each other. For actress Jean Louise Kelly, the role in this movie was the first and still remains the best in her career, and the relationship between her character and Uncle Buck is very clingy.

The younger kids Maisie and Miles, on the other hand, are more serviceable and are adorable every time they appear on screen. Young actors Gaby Hoffmann and Macaulay Culkin played such funny kids perfectly, and the latter's talented performance in this movie helped him become the very boy who must single-handedly defend his home from two rogue thieves a year later.

A sweet, touching, funny, instructive movie about family and true friendship with a dose of sadness. It shows that you should not judge a person just because he lives differently from everyone else. It would seem that the lack of family and stable income should make any of us unhappy, but Buck teaches us that joy can be found even in small things. Especially if you already have love in your heart.

A big man in a cape and hat with a kind smile on his lips and a big heart in his chest... surely children had an important place in his happy life.
