Review 4K Movie

The Grand Budapest Hotel was the first work by Wes Anderson that I encountered. After that, I watched several more films by this director, which managed to hook me and evoke more emotions than The Grand Budapest Hotel. However, I recommend starting your acquaintance with Anderson's work with this particular film. It would be wrong to call what Wes Anderson does simply “films.” The perfectly crafted color palette, cinematography, camera angles, symmetry, and star-studded cast are just a small part of what you can see in every frame. All of this is, of course, present in The Grand Budapest Hotel. Here you have Willem Dafoe as a hired killer, Tony Revolori as a hotel concierge, and Tilda Swinton, who, by the way, is very difficult to recognize at first because of her makeup!

At first glance, the film seems to be a colorful comedy, and we immediately notice the beautiful imagery, but the more you immerse yourself in it, the more you realize that it has many layers of meaning: it raises the theme of fascism, two world wars, and other, mostly sad, events of the 20th century, the author's specific view on the theme of death, and much more.

The choice of chronology for the plot is interesting: the story is divided into four time periods, each of which reflects its own values—the heyday of communism, the time before the World Wars, the time after them, and the present day. Even the appearance of the hotel itself differs at different times, showing its heyday and decline (the bright, pink building with a snowy landscape is contrasted with an ordinary dark brown building with an autumnal view). The main plot is not new to cinema, but the way Wes Anderson presents it and how visually thought-out his work is cannot be replicated by anyone else.

It is not for nothing that this is Wes Anderson's highest-grossing work. You can love it for its wonderful and talented actors, visual component, musical accompaniment, the director's understandable humor, and the themes it explores.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is like a real fairy tale for adults, where everything is worked out to the smallest detail, you want to look at each frame separately, and after watching it, you will definitely want to watch it again. Wes Anderson is an unusual director of our time, whose films can be easily recognized among thousands. Although his style is recognizable and similar, he always shows new stories and situations in his films and does it in different interesting ways!

I only saw this film in 2023, but it's never too late to see this masterpiece. It's one of those films that will be discussed for decades to come. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend watching it!
