Without a doubt, the original *Meet the Parents* left a lasting impression on you with its harsh, unvarnished truth: De Niro behaved exactly like your girlfriend’s dad, a retired tank corps colonel; the girlfriend herself quickly transformed from a heavenly vision into the Future Wife, and Ben Stiller’s character endured humiliations so painfully realistic that you found yourself laughing while simultaneously drenched in buckets of cold sweat.

The sequel turned the tables: in it, the bride’s parents go to visit the Fokers (actually, they’re the Fokers, but that’s okay—the film almost came out in Russian theaters under the title “Meet the Fokers”). Who, of course, also suffer from a multitude of the wildest quirks: Mom Streisand works as a therapist for sexual disorders, while Dad Hoffman uses the combined bathroom for a number two, politely chatting with De Niro, who is taking a shower. It turned out funny again, but this time somehow warmer and, for some reason, more relatable: Stiller’s parents have such specific quirks in their heads that this time it’s your girlfriend who’ll be nervously laughing. Especially in the scene where the family looks at photos of their naked two-year-old “our boy”—of course, in the presence of the “boy” himself, who’s ready to die of shame right then and there. If your mom hasn’t done something like that with people she barely knows at least once, then… you’re very lucky.

Special thanks to De Niro: over the past few years, he’s overacted in countless pieces of trash, during which time he’s noticeably faded. However, the Fakers annoy him so obviously and genuinely that the real Raging Bull is bursting to get out.
