Government agents managed to contain the spread of a deadly parasitic fungus capable of multiplying very rapidly and subjugating its host almost instantly. The entire population was eradicated, and the last specimen was placed in a secret underground storage facility. Eighteen years later, that very bunker houses a personal storage facility. Out of curiosity, two night-shift employees sneak into the lower levels, unaware that they are in mortal danger — due to global warming, the cooling system has failed, and the killer fungus has already begun infecting all living organisms unlucky enough to come into contact with it.

Interestingly, David Koepp not only writes screenplays for major Hollywood films, but also frequently publishes original short stories and novellas that are quite popular with readers. Kepp often turns to the genres of science fiction and thriller, thereby attempting to emulate Stephen King’s style, and at times he even produces quite interesting, noteworthy works in that field, such as “Cold Storage.” This novella gained quite a bit of popularity in its day, and while it didn’t become a major bestseller, it still brought Kepp additional fame, after which producers led by Gavin Pollon took on its film adaptation, joined by the author of the original work himself, for whom it was important to oversee the filming process as closely as possible. In our theaters, the film was titled “Cold Storage,” and I’ll say that it’s a pretty decent trash horror flick, which is far better than most genre films.

The film’s main character is played by Joe Keery, star of the popular series “Stranger Things.” This time, Kiri appears as Travis Micham, a likable but not particularly quick-witted or brave employee at a storage facility where people keep their belongings. For Travis, this job is of immense importance, and he can’t afford to get fired—otherwise, he’ll face serious consequences. So he’ll literally fight tooth and nail to keep his job, even when all hell breaks loose!

Kiri’s co-star is Georgina Campbell, another TV star (“Killing My Boyfriend”), who is trying to break into the big screen and ended up in “Cold Storage.” She plays Naomi Williams, who arrives for her first shift at the warehouses, and that’s when all the fun begins. Hearing an alarm sensor beeping somewhere behind the wall, Naomi convinces the hesitant Travis to investigate, and it turns out that long ago, a military base once stood on the site of the warehouses, where certain biological artifacts were hidden—artifacts that, years later, have decided to escape their prison. First and foremost, this involves some strange fungus that seeks to infect everything around it and turn it into something resembling a zombie. Neither Naomi, nor Travis for that matter, had expected this at all. For certain reasons, they become hostages in the warehouse and have to literally fight off hordes of infected people—and more.

Liam Neeson also makes an appearance in this story, charmingly poking fun at his tough-guy image from action movies like "Taken". And he pulls it off brilliantly, unlike in "The Naked Gun", which didn’t even have any decent humor to begin with. In "Cold Storage", Neeson plays a retired colonel who still thinks highly of himself, but his back aches, his legs don’t run as fast as he’d like, and his eyes sometimes fail him. But he keeps moving forward anyway, no matter how comical it may be. I think Neeson fits his character perfectly and manages to poke fun at himself brilliantly. Plus, his character has a significant impact on the plot, which is very important, and he’s not just there to grab attention on the posters. So I consider the Hollywood veteran’s appearance in this story entirely justified.

The film itself looks deliberately cartoonish, and you really can’t take it too seriously. There are a lot of comical scenes here; the characters often do unimaginably stupid things, especially Joe Keery’s character, who isn’t nearly as heroic as Steve from "Stranger Things", and there’s also a bit too much parodic violence. That said, despite the often-flawed logic and unrealistic plot twists, I’m happy to overlook all these nuances because the film has the best quality of all—it entertains wonderfully, distracts you, and makes you feel, if only for a moment, much smarter than most of the characters in the movie. And I certainly don’t want to blame the filmmakers for any logical inconsistencies, because they succeeded in their task and entertained us wonderfully.

“Cold Storage,” created for us by Hollywood maestro David Kepp and director Johnny Campbell, showed how to make zombie-themed horror films when you don’t have a big budget and want to present something original that can entertain an adult audience.
