Story Movie

Barnabas Collins, the owner of Collinvood Manor, is rich, powerful, and reputed to be an incorrigible Casanova—until he makes a fateful mistake by breaking Angelique Bouchard’s heart. A witch in the literal sense of the word, she condemns him to a fate worse than death—turning him into a vampire and burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is accidentally freed from the crypt and finds himself in the vastly changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood and finds the once-majestic mansion in ruins. The pitiful descendants of his family are in little better shape than the family estate, and each of them has their own skeletons in the closet.

Review 4K Movie

Making childhood dreams come true is a rare opportunity available to only a handful of people on earth. The eighth collaborative project between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton was precisely the fulfillment of their childhood dreams. “Dark Shadows” is a “soap opera” that gained popularity by populating a classic storyline with monsters. The series is so iconic that its fans include not only the duo mentioned above, but also Quentin Tarantino, Madonna, and Michelle Pfeiffer, among many others.

The vampire Barnabas Collins returns home after two hundred years of imprisonment and finds not only his relatives there, but also the witch responsible for his long absence. He must not only accept the “new” world and its rules, try to fit into the family, and get the family business back on track, but also settle the score with the beautiful and seductive Angelique Bouchard.

Tim Burton has made a film that is “truly” his own, which, following the “studio” version of "Alice in Wonderland", feels like a breath of fresh air. The director’s signature style, atmosphere, humor, and ideas blend perfectly with the execution of "Dark Shadows".

John August, who wrote the original screenplay, was sent “on leave” by his longtime collaborator Tim Burton, who replaced him with Seth Graham-Smith, who had previously written the adaptation of his own book *Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter*. His story is an excellent blend of love, hate, continuity, and family—and it’s not without a touch of sarcasm. Although the film runs nearly two hours, the screenwriter doesn’t let the audience relax for a single second. Even though the film features a large cast and not all characters are fully fleshed out, each one gets their moment in the spotlight. The screenplay brilliantly plays out all the situations involving a man from the past in a new and uncharted world, allowing the lead actor’s talent to shine to the fullest.

Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Bella Heathcote, Jackie Earl Haley, and Chloë Moretz—these are the actors who make this film unforgettable. Their performances allow “Dark Shadows” to become not just a movie, but a true milestone in modern cinema.

Danny Elfman—the composer who so skillfully sets the tone for any of Burton’s creations. His music perfectly complements every scene, sometimes veering into the realm of clichéd TV series tunes.

The film features a strange mix of special effects. Magnificent and visually rich effects are combined with unfinished and clearly simplistic ones. In their defense, I can only say that perhaps the creators were paying homage to the TV series, which clearly lacked the budget to incorporate sufficiently expensive effects into the plot.

Despite the fact that “Dark Shadows” is known and loved only in the U.S., this doesn’t make Burton’s new project any worse. The filmmakers have managed to create an international hit that any viewer will enjoy and understand.
