Brother and sister Michael and Louise come to their parents' remote farm to see their seriously ill elderly father, but their mother is not very happy to see them. She tells the children that they came for nothing and hangs herself in the barn the next day. The circumstances of her death seem strange to Michael, and Louise finds her mother's diary, where she describes an evil entity that is getting closer and closer.

'The Dark and the Wicked' is the fourth movie by American Brian Bertino.

The movie is very easy to immerse oneself in. The viewer from the first minutes is immersed in a very dark, pressurizing, depressing narrative. It is technically conditioned by the soundtrack, and (to the greatest extent) by the visuals, in which muted colors and brown and rusty palette prevail, and by the good old principle 'the devil lies in the details', which works in this case to perfection. And the lambs are adorable.

The screenplay (also created by Bertino) is very competently constructed: 'The Dark and the Wicked' both gives no boredom at the very beginning, and builds up the suspense gradually, and towards the end reality and obsession are almost indistinguishable neither for the characters, nor for the viewer. The viewer is covered with a creepy and unpleasant feeling that it is absolutely unclear who the 'enemy' is, as well as what he wants. The picture looks all the more favorable considering the absence of 'skeletons in the closet' and other 'ancestral curses' of all the characters.

What kind of fear do the creators consider? Simply put, the fear of dying alone. This is especially helped by the 'chemistry' between the characters (we are talking about members of the same family here), even if their characters are not very well revealed.

Actors. Marin Ireland plays very well. It is perfectly visible how the mental state of her heroine deteriorates in the course of the movie. Mykes Abbott, Jr. liked in the role of this nihilist. Xander Berkeley, Julie Oliver-Touchstone, Ella Ballentine looked nice in episodic (and not so episodic) roles.

In fact, 'The Dark and the Wicked' also has a lot of minuses not noted by me. But the movie is so good that you don't want to notice these minuses while watching it.
