The final film from the cycle of films about Antoine Doinel, which began with the epoch-making film 'Four Hundred Blows' - "Escaping Love" seems to draw a line, sums up all the life conclusions of the protagonist.

Antoine is in his thirties, works in a publishing house, and has published an autobiographical novel about his childhood and youth. Doinel divorces Christine, and their divorce becomes the first in France by the voluntary consent of both parties. Antoine is in love again, this time with a young bookstore saleswoman.

Doinel is the age of summing up the first life results, and random coincidences and unexpected meetings throughout the film return him to the past.

For greater clarity, the picture is made as a mosaic: Doinel's new adventures are interspersed with scenes from previous films about him, as well as from Truffaut's films that seem to have nothing to do with Doinel, such as "The Man Who Loved Women", "American Night". The theme of going back to the past and coming to terms with it in order to be able to start all over again is a recurring theme in this film. Antoine meets his mother's former lover, with whom he had not communicated for many years and who had died by that time. Together they visit the cemetery where she is buried, and Doinel listens to the story about her. For the first time, he realizes his family feelings for his mother and his inner similarity with her. And, perhaps, at this moment he forever parted with the ghosts of childhood grievances.

The film "Escaping Love" is about the fickleness of love and the transience of life and about accepting it the way it is. This is a film about the fact that nothing in life is permanent, but people are looking for love and the possibility of happiness again and again. This picture is the most lyrical of all films about Doinel; Truffaut completed his doinel cycle very successfully with its strong, emotional and bright finale.
