A young eccentric flower seller with a painter's soul, Antoine Doinel (Leo) is married to a music teacher Christine (Jade). And everything is generally good with them: a cozy apartment, no problems with money, Antoine's new job in a reputable international company, the birth of his son Alphonse. In a word, not life, but a dream. But over time, the young Frenchman gets tired of a quiet family life in a provincial district, and Antoine starts an affair with a Japanese woman who came to France to work.

François Truffaut, apparently, decided to conduct a utterly cynical experiment, forcing a young married couple to endure, it seems, all the family hardships in just a couple of years of living together. It all starts with disputes about the name of the child, then - irregular, even rare sex, hard working days, passion for another person. Truffaut turned out to be extremely distrustful of family values ​​​​and therefore deftly ridiculed the desire of many couples for a cloudless life, immediately confronting the "doves" with numerous difficulties and adding the traditional melancholy French flavor to taste (which is worth at least the place where our couple lives - not a drop of light , only dull and inexpressive colors corresponding to the concept of "marriage", which for many has already become synonymous with the word "boredom"). Although to a greater extent the director still makes fun of the life aspirations of the protagonist, his psychology; Antoine himself does not understand what he wants from life: to deal with flowers or become a famous writer, to stay with the faithful and caring Christine or with the mysterious Japanese Kyoko, to live the rest of the days in proud bachelorhood or next to his wife and beloved son.

Today, "Family Hearth" already means a problem that has become part of reality. Many couples do not live even ten years together, after which they slam the doors and disperse to different corners in search of new sensations, not wanting to compromise. True, Truffaut, although he showed himself to be a big cynic, did not put an end to the separation of Antoine and Christine in his film. After two years, after going through all the hardships, they were able to reconsider the concept of a perfect marriage relationship. Antoine and Christine become like a neighbor's elderly couple: a nervous husband, waiting for his wife, throws her coat and hat onto the stairs, and she runs out into the front door in a panic, saying that she is in a hurry as she can. The Doinel spouses begin to do the same, and the neighbor’s phrase sounds all the more comical: “Now they love each other for real.”
