The Apartment justifiably made the list of 50 must-see films and many other ratings, and was deservedly awarded three Golden Globes, five Oscars (with ten nominations) and three British Academy Awards. Three of the major awards for Best Picture went to "The Apartment" that year, and two of the three went to the performers in the lead roles.

"The Apartment" was the most successful film of 1961, not only in terms of awards but also in terms of box office receipts. All this led to the film soon serving as the basis for the popular Broadway musical "Promises, Promises," which ran at the Schubert Theatre from 1968 to 1972. More than a thousand performances were given, and the production was subsequently transferred to the Prince of Wales Theatre in London. The main reason for this success is the incredibly touching, not leaving you indifferent, plot, which will undoubtedly never lose its relevance.

And the plot of the film is as simple as genius. Charlie Baxter works for an insurance company in New York City and hopes to get promoted by lending your apartment on the Upper West Side to higher-ups who want at least a little break from their wives. Four recommendations land on Mr. Sheldrake's human resources director's desk at once. He doesn't mind Baxter's promotion at all, but, as usual, for a favor in return. So Charlie gets involved in an adventure that will affect him far more than he could have imagined at the time.

Perhaps, when mentioning Jack Lemmon, most people think of the movie "Some Like it Hot", if only because "There are Only Girls in Jazz" is systematically shown on many TV channels. Meanwhile, we can safely say that the role of Mr. Baxter was lucky actor no less than the role of the beautiful Daphne. Not to get sympathy for the hero is simply impossible. Of course, he created all this situation, but somehow we still feel pity for him, having to wander the streets of the town in terrible weather instead of enjoying the comforts of home.

Shirley MacLaine charmed me completely and irrevocably. Fran Kubelik is the kind of girl who strikes me with a simplicity and, at the same time, a kind of sophistication that combine to leave the most pleasant impression. In a girl in whom colleagues saw only shrewdness and a pretty face, the main character saw something more. And he liked it so much that he did not hesitate, was ready to sacrifice everything for her sake - and the reputation and work, and even his own happiness, if only she would be all right.

Such a story simply could not do without a happy, kind ending, leaving behind exactly the feeling that should leave a great romantic comedy. The kind of feeling you rarely get after watching modern melodramas and really miss.

"Shut up and turn in," is Fran's response to her declaration of love. But her smile leaves no doubt that all will be well with them.
