The internationally acclaimed conductor and composer Lydia Thar becomes the first ever female conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. She gives interviews, publishes books, teaches and, in her new position, begins rehearsals for Mahler's Symphony No. 5 and takes care of her partner, the orchestra's first violinist, and her young adopted daughter. But when one of her former charges commits suicide, Lydia's impeccable reputation is threatened.

'Tar' is a fine auteur film with excellent acting. The only thing that might discourage viewing is the long running time. Two and a half hours with impressive dialogues and reflections on music will be an insurmountable barrier for some. The first hour is really difficult, as the author is extremely unhurried in revealing the main character's image: her family life, work, including rehearsals and lectures, hobbies and the slight anxiety that various unpleasant noises cause, from the creaking in the car interior to the irritating nightly howling of the refrigerator. The heroine has perfect hearing. She is a recognized talent and, in fact, a genius of her time with plenty of awards and accolades. She is a respected conductor and composer with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. She is an active feminist and openly lesbian. She always wears pantsuits, she is wilful, abrasive, brash and straightforward. She has no fear, for she is a hundred percent sure of herself, for this world lies at her feet. At some point, there is a sense that she embodies the image of the overbearing man who allows itself too much, not a bit not thinking about the possible consequences. She does not hesitate to flirt with young girls in front of everyone. It would seem that she has reached an unreachable height of greatness, and no one can prevent it. Suddenly, one day, one of the former young people in love, who had been whipped, used, and then discarded as unnecessary junk, committed suicide. The world shuddered, frightened, and decided to shield itself from the hostile abuser by subjecting it to a Culture of Abolition. Just yesterday the whole world adored her, and today she is on the verge of a total collapse that could destroy her life, her health, and her career.

The emotionally intense finale will more than reward every viewer for the excruciatingly long wait for the great journey of one genius who thought he could do anything. Terrific acting work, played by Cate Blanchett. This is definitely a serious Oscar bid for Best Actress. And for me personally, 'Thar' is going to be one of the top films of 2022. If you like classical music and art house, this is definitely your movie.
