Review 4K Movie

"Whiplash" begins and ends with the same spectacular roll, performed by the main character in completely different circumstances. In the first case, it's the beat of an insecure freshman in an empty conservatory classroom, in the second, a stunning solo by an obsessed drummer in a crowded Carnegie Hall. Between these two mesmerizing musical scenes - an outstanding thriller about the invisible line beyond which a man who craves greatness is ready to cross.

Like many American indie films in recent years, 'Whiplash' made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, where both critics and audiences awarded it major awards, after which it successfully rolled around the world, having visited, including, Cannes and Toronto. The typical fate of a standard Sundan film, which with a certain amount of luck should end with a couple of condescending nominations at the next Oscars. However, Damien Chazelle's film is very different from the Sundance model winner. Most of the films awarded at the main independent film festival are in fact very personal and deeply local stories, aimed at a specific American audience and are expanded versions of previously filmed short films.

In contrast to them, "Whiplash" was originally conceived as a large full-length movie and does not suffer from periodic plot shifts or the absence of a clear ideological message. On the contrary, the story here is surprisingly holistic, keeping the viewer in suspense almost without ceasing and painfully universal - who of us has not dreamed of leaving a great mark behind? So Andrew Niemann, a hardworking student of the best musical institution in the country, wants to be remembered by the world as a brilliant drummer. Under the harsh leadership of the fastidious conductor Fletcher, he brings himself to complete spiritual exhaustion, breaks his hands in blood, throws the girl for the sake of a career, but in no way can he reach the final disposition of the maestro, which would open the way for him to eternity.

It is this unsoiled, exciting musical entourage of the tape that is its main distinguishing feature. Chazelle not only places the standard dramatic conflict between the student and the teacher in the framework of a non-trivial musical thriller, but brings it to the maximum crescendo, to the frenzied tremolo, so much so that by the end the story takes on a serious epic scale. The physically felt tension, which the director systematically builds up from the first to the last frame, reaches its climax several times per film, but when it seems that the denouement is about to begin, the picture gives a new somersault and steps on to the next round of incessant anxious expectation, which will lead to amazing hypnotic ending. Demonic J.K.Simmons gives out his best role here: one play with his eyes, an ominous grin, sharp, clear movements of sinewy hands turn him into Mephistopheles from music, as if hunting for the souls of weak-willed musicians.

Miles Teller is an expressionless young man, unknown to anyone a couple of years ago - his brilliant acting, performed with frightening skill at the best moments, fully justifies the advance given to him by many critics for his role in the movie "An exciting time" a year ago. When these two face off in the finale in an unprecedented 15-minute musical duel, reminiscent of all known screen duels at once, and unlike any of them, all those dubious thoughts that the director puts about the limit of possibilities that a person is ready to reach in chasing the unattainable, imperceptibly disappear and hang, after a few unforgettable moments, mute questions in the deafening silence of the concert hall.
